KALAP, Uttrakhand, unseen untouched village
Kalap is a village in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of 7,500 ft, the village is nestled among virgin pine and deodar forests, and overlooks the gorge cut open by the roaring River Supin. The Supin is the major contributor to the River Tons, which in turn is a major tributary of the River Yamuna.
Kalap is 210 kms from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand and 450 kms from New Delhi.
The nearest rail station and airport is at Dehradun. Dehradun is well-connected by daily trains and flights from New Delhi. It takes 6 hours by car or 10 hours by bus to reach the town of Netwar, the nearest point to Kalap. There are also 2 trek routes to Kalap depending on the season. The summer route is 8 km, which is about 6 hours of walking and the winter route is 5 km, which is about 4 hours of walking.
The village of Kalap and its surrounding villages are steeped in the mythology of the Mahabharata. The main temple at Kalap is dedicated to Karna, the warrior who fought alongside the Kauravas. The idol of Karna moves between the various villages in this region. When the idol is carried to a village, it is celebrated as Karna Maharaj Utsav. The last Utsav at Kalap was in 2014, and it will happen again only after more than a decade.
Kalap is home to about 3,000 sheep and has many handlooms. Wool is naturally dyed without chemicals and woven into cloth. Currently, travellers can get ethnic wear stitched for themselves in 36 hours when they visit!
Everything that you need to live, eat and wear is made at Kalap. It is a unique way of life, imposed by the harshness of the remote location. It is a great place to observe the practice of organic farming in everyday life.
One part of visiting Kalap is the stunning natural surrounding, while the other is meeting the local people, listening to their stories and enjoying locally grown food.
