HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024, TRAVELERS!!!

The start of the New Year is one of our favorite holidays. Where we’re from, we welcome the new year with magnificent fireworks displays, a huge midnight feast for the family, basketfuls of round fruits, lots of jumping, and making loud noises to ward off evil spirits (I know, but hey.). Even as a child, it’s the holiday I would look forward to the most.

But more than the festivities, I love it more for what it stands for: new beginnings. Sure, it has its roots can be traced back to Pagan origins. And sure, you can always turn a new leaf any other day of the year I feel more encouraged when you celebrate it with the rest of the world. And the changing of the calendars somehow fosters a fresh atmosphere.

As travelers, it also resets the clock for us. The coming of the new year gives us a clean slate, a chance to reevaluate our journeys, correct our mistakes, do better, go farther, learn more than in the past year.

So to our followers, here’s a little something! We made a dozen artworks to inspire you to travel more and enjoy more of what this world and life in general have to offer. Happy New Year 2024!!!

Bhutan is known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon” due to its dramatic landscapes, which are often shrouded in mist and surrounded by thunderstorms.

Bhutan is a deeply spiritual country, with Buddhism as its main religion. The country is dotted with monasteries and temples, and the Buddhist way of life is deeply ingrained in the culture.

Bhutan is home to a number of rare and endangered animals, including the snow leopard, the Bengal tiger, and the black-necked crane.

Bhutan is the only carbon-negative country in the world, meaning that it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits.

Bhutan has a unique dress code that requires all citizens to wear traditional clothing when in public. Men wear a gho, which is a long robe tied at the waist, and women wear a kira, which is a long, wraparound skirt.

Bhutan is home to the world’s highest unclimbed peak, Gangkhar Puensum, which stands at 7,570 meters (24,836 feet).

Bhutan is one of the few countries in the world that has preserved its traditional architecture and building techniques. Many buildings are made from wood and are decorated with intricate carvings and paintings.

Bhutan has only recently allowed television and internet into the country, and it is still closely regulated.

A tiny French-speaking island in the Indian Ocean, tucked between Mauritius and Madagascar, La Réunion is only 2500 km2. But don’t be mistaken by its size: home to over 200 micro-climates, it is a treasure for landscape variety. This volcanic island also hosts more than 800 endemic species; no wonder its national park has been added to Unesco's list of World Heritage sites. Its population is also extremely diverse; as history brought people of European, Asian, African ancestry and more together, they have learnt to coexist and create exchanges between cultures.

Have you visited Lakshadweep?

Comprising a string of 36 palm-covered, white-sand-skirted coral islands 300km off the Kerala coast, Lakshadweep (India's smallest Union Territory) is as stunning as it is isolated. Only 10 of these islands are inhabited, mostly by Sunni Muslim fishers. With fishing and coir production the main sources of income, local life here remains highly traditional, and a caste system divides islanders between Koya (land owners), Malmi (sailors) and Melachery (farmers). The archipelago's administrative centre is Kavaratti island, and most islanders speak a dialect of Malayalam.

The most beautiful take off of all the trips I had till date!!!

Happy Pongal

Pongal, the four-day harvest festival celebrated in South India, especially Tamil Nadu, will be celebrated with great enthusiasm from January 14-17 this year. Celebrated in mid-January every year, it also marks the beginning of Uttarayan- sun's journey towards north and end of winter season. Pongal is celebrated around the same time as other harvest festivals of India like Makar Sankranti, Lohri and Magh Bihu.

The celebrations begin on the first day with Bhogi Pongal as fresh harvest of rice, sugarcane, turmeric is brought from the fields. Old and useless domestic articles are discarded and are burnt along with cow dungs as part of the ritual of Bhogi Mantalu which also signifies new beginnings.

The second day of the festival, also known as Surya Pongal or Thai Pongal, is dedicated to the Sun God and is also the first day of the Tamil month Thai. On this day women wake up early in the morning, clean their houses and decorate homes with beautiful kolam designs. On this day, the freshly harvested rice is boiled in pots along with milk and jaggery till they overflow and spill. The ceremony captures the essence of the word Pongal which means to boil or overflow. The Sun God is offered this dessert before it's served to the family members on banana leaves.

The third day of Pongal is called Mattu Pongal where Lord Ganesha and Parvati are worshipped and Pongal is offered to them. The word mattu means bull and on this day, cattle are bathed, their horns are painted and covered with shining metal caps. They are also decorated with flower garlands and bells.

The fourth and final day of Pongal is called Kaanum Pongal which is also considered an auspicious day to start new bonds and relationships.

Happy Makar Sankranti!!!

One of the major festivals celebrated with much pomp in India, Makar Sankranti holds great significance for Hindus. The festival is considered auspicious for tenacity, worship, charity and sacrifice in the scriptures. Makar Sankranti, or simply Sankranti, is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) and marks the sun's transit into Makara (Capricorn) raashi (zodiac sign). This festival is considered the most auspicious occasion and is one of the few Hindu festivals aligned with the solar cycle. It marks the beginning of the harvest season when people worship new crops and share them with delight.

Makar Sankranti is considered a day of happiness and prosperity by Hindus. It is believed that taking a bath in the Ganges, on this day, is auspicious. Devotees also pay tribute to the Sun God and express gratitude towards him for blessing us with his warm and glowing rays.

Puga Valley in the Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir was one of the areas which showed significant potential for geothermal energy. Puga lies in the south-eastern part of Ladakh and forms a part of the Himalayan geothermal belt. This zone shows evidence of geothermal activity in the form of hot springs, mud pools, sulphur and borax deposits.

“Since Ladakh lies in the confluence of two continental plates, geothermal (energy) can be found easily here. The potential is strong as we have good source of water due to rivers and hot springs

Pamban bridge: India's first sea bridge

It is an engineering marvel that evokes awe! Few can forget a train journey on the Pamban bridge, connecting Rameswaram island to the mainland.

With 143 piers, spanning 2 km between the mainland and the island, it is the second longest sea bridge in India after the 2.3-km Bandra-Worli sea link on Mumbai's western coast.

Come February, the Pamban bridge, commissioned in 1914, will turn 100 and officials of the Southern Railway's Madurai division have lined up several programmes spread over a month to mark the occasion.

The Pamban bridge was the only link between Rameswaram and the mainland until 1988 when a road bridge, running parallel to it, was built. Earlier, it used to transport hundreds of pilgrims everyday to the temple in the island.

As India's first sea bridge, it has also become a tourist attraction by itself as people watch in awe when the two leaves of the bridge open up to let ships to pass through.
