The bracket fungus grips the branch, not out of weakness, but as a foundation. It doesn’t just take—it builds, layering itself into something more complex, more resilient. It reminds me that growth isn’t about independence; it’s about using what’s around you to refine yourself.

Our first night in Agumbe was a rainy one, leaving us unable to explore the surrounding forest. However, the excitement of encountering wildlife kept our spirits high. One species that had been on my must-see-and-photograph list was the Hump-nosed Pit Viper, nicknamed "The Landmine" by my dear friend , which made me even more curious about its behavior.

After hours of searching without success, we were on our way back to our stay, feeling a tinge of disappointment (though, truthfully, we're never truly disappointed—every wildlife sighting excites us, no matter how many times we've seen it before). Suddenly, shouted, "Ruka! Ruka! Gaadi Ruka! Koi toh snake mila, crossing the road!"

We rushed out, half-expecting to see a Malabar Pit Viper, especially since we had sadly come across three road kills earlier. To our delight and surprise, it was none other than the elusive Hump-nosed Pit Viper—the Landmine itself!

This incredible species left us in awe with its ability to camouflage perfectly among dry leaves and spring out with its full body in defense—a behavior that’s nothing short of fascinating! What made the experience even more surprising was spotting this leaf-litter specialist crossing an open road, far from its usual concealed habitat. It was a rare and unexpected moment, and we were fortunate enough to observe and photograph it, even if the location was a bit awkward.

Junabai from Tadoba Tiger Reserve made this an unforgettable moment for our guest, . She had wished to see Junabai emerge from the grasslands to drink from the flowing canal—and our patience paid off. After waiting for at least an hour in the jeep, Junabai finally appeared, stepping out from the grasslands to quench her thirst at the nearby canal.

During our recent trip to while we were looking for Choti Tara and her cubs, we stumbled upon a pack of 10–13 , jumping and softly whistling. We noticed that the pack was splitting into 2-3 groups. A few meters away, there was a herd of sambhar deer with a single calf, so we assumed the pack was strategizing a hunt.

Just back from an amazing trip to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR)

We had some incredible moments- Sloth bear walking in front of our Jeep, Junabai and her cubs playing just a few feet away, the Mama-Bhanja duo with a kill, and even a pack of wild dogs strategizing the hunt. Watching Chandni and Bhola cross the road right in front of us, locking eyes with everyone!

Saw 7 tigers, a sloth bear, wild dogs, and so much more. Tadoba always delivers!

Thank you for hosting us with incredible service and hospitality!

Raorchestes montanus, also known as the Montane bush frog, is a species found only in the high-altitude Shola forests of Kudremukha, the second-highest peak in Karnataka. True to its name, this frog inhabits mountain regions, and accessing its habitat required a challenging 5-hour trek, ascending close to 1900 meters.

The more serene the landscape appears, the tougher the climb becomes. I took this photo after completing over 80% of the ascent, and at that point, it feels like giving up is unavoidable. However, the sight of two frog species found only at the peak made the climb worth it, despite the constant leech bites, rain, blood, and the weight of ponchos (yes, even a poncho feels like a heavy load). I’m thrilled to have conquered Karnataka’s second-highest peak just to witness these elusive frogs—Raorchestes indigo and Raorchestes montanus.

Photos coming soon!

Join us for a talk by Dr. Ramana Athreya as he shares experiences from his expedition to New Guinea Island (Western Papua) and his fascination with birds-of-paradise. New Guinea is renowned for its extraordinary array of Birds-of-Paradise, with 24 species residing in its Indonesian half, 16 of which are concentrated in the northwest Vogelkop peninsula.
Despite the island's general difficulty for visitors, the Vogelkop's small size offers an accessible and cost-effective opportunity for birdwatchers to observe these spectacular birds, with rewards ranking among the highest internationally.

Dr. Ramana is a member of the faculty of Physics and Biology at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. An astronomer by training, Dr. Athreya is the only Indian to have ever discovered and described a new bird species in the country – the spectacular Bugun Liocichla. He “discovered” Eaglenest sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh for the Indian birdwatching community and initiated the highly successful and much acclaimed Bugun tribal community conservation oriented ecotourism project in Eaglenest wildlife sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh. His research group explores biodiversity patterns in Arunachal Pradesh and the ecological processes responsible for them.

Topic: Birding in New Guinea Island (Western Papua)
