🇯🇵 Setogawa Canal is a modest canal that runs through the town of Hida Furukawa. It’s a beautiful canal but the houses that line it, with their stark white walls, are even more breathtaking. The canal is kept clean by an unlikely team of helpers: thousands of carp! They live in the canal from April to November each year. In the winter, they are moved to a pond that’s nearby.

🇯🇵 We were casually walking the market area of Takayama when, we saw a Japanese lady working on soemthing interesting… and we got talking! 👵🏻
She told us the method she was using to dye her craft was called ‘a shaped resist dyeing’ technique. It’s used frequently in households of Japan… She also showed us how her years of skills have led her to master the skill of making shibori dolls she put up in her shop’s display ❤️

🇯🇵 We’re inside a traditional Japanese home in the world heritage area 🏆 these style houses were built in the 1800s and they’re still standing strong 😱 this extremely rare form of architecture uses absolutely no nails or metals in its construction 🔨 our guide Keith let us know that the intricately built roof needs to be changed every 20 years for maintenance and the cost is partly covered by 🤍
