Yarsagumba: A Caterpillar-Fungus is also Known as The 'Himalayan Vi**ra' / Himalayan Gold Rush.
The origins are Tibetan: Yart Swa Gun Bu, which means ‘herb in the summer and insect in the winter'.
Before the rainy season, the fungus infects caterpillar larvae living in the grassy soil. When it finally attacks the head, the larvae die. The stalks of the fungus then propagate in the head, growing 2-3 inches long and become brown in colour. It tastes like mushroom, flavoursome, sweet and neutral in nature. It can be eaten plain or powdered, mixed with milk or water.
This Caterpillar Fungus is endemic to Bhutan, China, India, and Nepal and threatened due to overexploitation driven by increasing demand, especially in traditional medicine markets.
In an effort to conserve and protect this species, extraction/harvesting and trade of Caterpillar Fungus is regulated through permits, guidelines, and policies of the range states, such as Sikkim and Uttarakhand in India .
Known as the most expensive herb it can cost anywhere from 15 lalhs for half a kg to more . Around 3,000 pieces of yarsagumba are needed to make a kilogram. The conditions faced for harvesting these are most harsh. The routes are treacherous & one has to face freezing winds, rain, strong ultraviolet rays, low oxygen and altitude sickness...some have even fall off the unforgiving steep cliffs to collect this Herbal Gold.
This caterpillar fungus has immense medicinal values, such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and vasorelaxant activities or heart protective roles,it is also known as the “Himalayan Vi**ra.”

Gudi Padwa - a spring-time festival that marks the traditional new year for Marathi and Konkani Hindus. It is celebrated in and near Maharashtra and Goa on the first day of the Chaitra month to mark the beginning of the New year
A notable sight during Gudhi Padwa are the numerous Gudhis at every household. A bright colorful silk scarf-like cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo. On top of it, some neem leaves and mango leaves are attached along with a garland of flowers. This is capped with a silver, bronze or copper pot (handi or kalash) signifying victory or achievement.The whole arrangement is hoisted outside each household, typically to the right, or through a window or terrace. It is visible to everybody.
The region's most celebrated warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was reportedly the first to start celebrations after a victory.

Bhutan is a spiritual land ....Driving through makes you feel enveloped in the positivity of the sacred air that blows by. All along you will feel protected by the Prayer flags that you will see everywhere. Make sure you tie your own too.
Prayer flags are colorful rectangular pieces of clothes inscribed with prayers, mantras and auspicious symbols. Buddhists believe that the prayer flags generate spiritual vibrations that are released when blown by the wind and the prayers are carried in the air like silent prayers. Any person and place touched by the wind will be happier and uplifted. (Hmmm…no wonder when you are in Bhutan you feel unusually happy.😄)
Prayer flags come in horizontal or vertical forms. Horizontal ones called “Wind Horse” are the more common and come in set of five 5 flags in 5 different colors. Each color represents the 5 basic elements: blue for space, white for air, red for fire, green for water and yellow for earth. Buddhists believe that balancing these elements brings harmony to the environment and good health to the body and the mind.
Prayer flags are also used to appease local spirits and gods. Hence, prayers flags are planted in places where they may reside like mountains, lakes, streams and valleys
Prayer flags are always seen hanging in high passes and spiritual places like stupas and temples. They are also hanged in any place that people wish to be blessed or protected.

Just wrapped up our exclusive New year eves drive- Mysteries & Folklores - ROYAL RAJASTHAN We were soulfully driving back home to Mumbai.....still cascading the sand waves lost in the Thar desert. Definitely not looking forward to the Omicron waves that had hit the city ....when on approaching Vapi on NH 48 , we saw vendors.... mostly very traditional Gujarati women, who had earthen pots on little trails of smoke on the side of the highway. Instantly we thought it might be Ponkh or Undhiyu. But when we pulled up the very shy homely chef said she was selling "Ubadiyu". And that's when we realized...with all our travels...we had never come across this one before & we just had to get some for ourselves. So "Ubadiyu" is how "Undhiyu" the otherwise popular seasonal dish started . While Undhiyu is cooked in oil, Ubadiyu is mostly steamed with freshly ground green garlic corriander & a few other spices & then served with a spicy chutney. "Undhu" means ‘upside down’..& that is how the winter & root vegetables are cooked in a rustic style over embers of coal sealed in layers in an earthen pot with aromatic leaves like ajwain . In Gujarat there are about 18 varieties of " Papdi bean " and only a couple are used especially the Surti papdi, from small villages these beans have a sweet taste being sourced from organic fields. So let's talk about what it tasted like.....it had a mesmerizing Smoky smell....reminding me of the several bornfires I had left behind in Rajasthan....the Purple yam potatoes & sweet potatoes were charred in places that made them even more desirable. The beans were the best!!! Tender & melt in the mouth ...you just need to patiently place one at a time on your tongue.. give it a light pressure against your palette....& then the Smoky earth kissed entire pod & bean releases to warm your soul , while you tug at the string of the pod .....and just like that a new craving was born! It's all part of enjoying this fabulous
