Ever tried a ragi ball?
Year 2023 was observed as the International Year of Millets (Ragi) in India and elsewhere. Sure these hardy grains are getting all the attention and are now pretty much mixed in every food recipe to fortify its nutritional value, haven’t you heard of ragi biscuits or ragi pancakes.
But if you happen to visit an indigenous tribal family living in a tribal hamlet sharing its boundary with Bandipur forest, you’ll see a small patch of land with ragi planted on it. Ragi has been an integral part of the tribal culture in H D Kote for generations. It's uncanny how the grain’s resilience matches with that of the tribal people. When we started our tribal school, the children found it hard to adjust to the vegetarian menu of the food being served to them. Gladly they accepted ragi mudde (ragi balls) and still very much do. The trick is not to chew but to swallow a small portion or ragi mudde (which happens to be very sticky) dipped in sambar or rasam. Do try it when you visit our beautiful and almost magical tribal school.
Nutrition through balanced diets is vital for building the #humancapital of children studying at VTCL. We thank our partner @feedingindia for supporting us in nourishing the ambitions of VTCL students.

A step towards achieving our vision of ethical, rational and cost effective health care, SVYM signed an MoU with the Dept of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka to pilot the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) in the state in three districts in a launch event held in Mysuru on 6th Feb 2024.
Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, GoK launched the microsites in the presence of other esteemed dignitaries.
Initially, Mysuru, Belagavi and Udupi have been chosen as the microsites where the program is going to be implemented. Our joint efforts with private medical establishments across these districts will pave the way for implementing ABDM.
Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) has been chosen as the Field Interface Agency (FIA) for the program. SVYM's existing presence in all districts of the state through EMTCT (Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV) and its strong rapport with the health care systems at the grassroots will play a part in achieving the project's objectives. SVYM will deploy people on-ground to visit every private clinic, lab, pharmacy, and small hospital, working one-on-one with these health facilities.
We are happy to partner with the Govt. of Karnataka and National Health Authority in implementing Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

What's your morning ritual?
At VTCL, ours is to pick fresh produce from our own agricultural patch in our school in the morning, have a warm glass of milk, study while the kitchen staff cooks delicious meals that we'll have during breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Of course, with little lessons like washing our hands, cleaning our dishes after we eat, not wasting food and making sure the eggshells and vegetable skins go into making manure. Our teachers always eat after the students have had their meal and we like to serve our guests and enjoy a ragi ball and majjige with them.
We thank our partners for supporting us in nourishing the dream of VTCL students.

Have you heard of anyone gifting a toilet?
In a small village called Y Mallapura in Raichur, members of Siddhaganga Self Help Group have taken the onus upon themselves to change the narrative of perpetual water woes following scarce rainfall and severe droughts, year after year.
Together, these women members run a WASH Mart, a one stop store for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) related products. From selling cement rings used in making toilet soak pits, to scaffoldings used for rainwater harvesting on rooftops to soap and floor sanitisers used in govt. schools, the Mart is one of its kind in the entire taluk. The WASH mart also serves as an outlet for products made by other women SHGs in the area.
Earning around INR 17,000 in a month, the vision isn't limited to become economically self reliant. Having experienced the water inequalities for decades, the women know the wealth there is in water and have made a quiet commitment to make their community water wealthy.
The self help group engages with the community members to spread awareness about water conservation and sanitation.
The mart has a WASH information centre for helping the community members benefit from Govt schemes and helps them in applying for construction of toilets, soak pits and farming ponds.
What is inspiring is that the women from the Self Help Group offer a loan to the community members to have a toilet built at their homes. The loan comes from their micro savings collected over many months as a Self Help Group. Once their loan is paid back, they issue the same to another family in need. The SHG has been giving preference to the elderly and the specially abled. They helped a young woman with physical disability construct a toilet in her home and for the first time in 20 years, she could get over the need to go out in the fields.
Financing WASH ecosystem to enable communities lead the way towards reducing water inequalities shows in success stories like that of Siddhaganga SHG. It is f
Shaking the world in a gentle way!
No parent would ever forget their baby’s first steps. It is by no means a small feat, and for a reason termed a milestone in a child’s development. Many would revisit the moment again and again to cherish this achievement.
Thanushree’s mother too is making a video of her daughter’s first steps. It may seem like her patience and conviction have subdued her excitement, but her efforts are showing up as Thanushree turns 5. It is quite apparent that neither Thanushree nor her mother are going to let Cerebral Palsy stop them from reaching this crucial milestone.
At home in her Village Malali in H D Kote, Thanushree does her physical therapy routine with her mother everyday and tries to walk with the help of the parallel bars made by her father using bamboo. Both her parents were trained to continue therapy at home at the Rehabilitation Gym at SVYM’s rural hospital, Vivekananda Memorial Hospital during their weekly visits.
The Rehab Resource Centre at the hospital has blueprints and designs of rehab equipment that can be made at home with raw materials that are often used by farmers and are easily available. Being deft craftsmen, some villagers have even improvised and improved the design of the rehab equipment available at the Rehab Resource Centre.
With the involvement of parents and community members in care and rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Palsy, the goal is to make it sustainable and break the stereotypes and the discrimination children with disabilities and their families face in rural communities.
It is possible that Thanushree’s mother will revisit this video too, not only to cherish the moment, but maybe to renew her resolve to keep
working with her daughter so she can not only face the world but also shake the world in her own gentle way.
Happy World Physical Therapy Day to her and to everyone!
PS - The video along with the background music is made by Thanushree's mother and shared in a whatsapp

"If an elephant can deliver a baby in a forest, why can't I"
This statement from a woman from Jenukuruba Tribe living on the fringes of Bandipur forest in H D Kote region still plays clearly in our memory. Her belief in the traditional practice of giving birth at home was rational, validated through her life experiences and indigenous culture, she had never seen or experienced delivering a baby in a hospital, being the first generation of displaced tribal communities, moved out of the forest. But now as the second generation comes of age, there's a shift in the mindset, and we salute the mothers and mother in laws for leading that change.
In 1997, when SVYM started its maternal and newborn care program, the baseline survey showed that ~95% of the pregnant women from indigenous tribal communities in the region delivered at home. Not every childbirth would bring happy news, high occurrence of anemia in pregnant women and pregnancy induced hypertension led to high risk pregnancy, a leading cause for maternal-newborn mortality.
Today, we see a complete turn-around of the scenario with hospital deliveries to the tune of 97.66% in the year 2021. The direct result of which is that we recorded 0 maternal deaths for the 897 recorded deliveries in the year 2021 among indigenous tribal women. This is a significant achievement against a backdrop of COVID-19, which had disrupted essential health care delivery by cutting access to institutional health care.
The complementing institution and community based approach taken by SVYM played a crucial role in keeping the pregnant tribal women connected to Antenatal Care through ANC follow ups, awareness about nutrition, scanning and vital check-ups at their home through mobile mothercare kits that are solar powered.
Facilitating delivery at SVYM's Vivekananda Memorial Hospital or other Govt Hospitals and Community Health Centres in the vicinity ensured 98% delivery in hospitals. Post Natal Care of the new mothers through immunisation,

Little-big aspirations sprout under the Bandipur forest canopy shade in our tribal school Viveka Tribal Centre for Learning (VTCL).
Ananya, from 9th standard has been missing her elder sister Sinchana, who is studying at Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF). Ananya says she is proud of the fact that her sister is the first from her entire family to go out and study, even more, pursue higher education in a technical field.
After Sinchana got selected for Nettur Technology Training Foundation, Ananya and many other girls from VTCL and the community aspire to do the same.
Both the girls are the second generation of indigenous tribal families to have studied at VTCL.
We hope these subtle signs lead to something bigger. We hope to see these aspirations result in #indigenous and rural women take interest in science and contribute towards it.

World Toilet Day
Don't you remember raising your hand and requesting the teacher - Miss may I go out? A visit to a toilet is as much a right as it is a request for every student. But still many school children around India and many parts of the world don't have an access to clean toilets. Much less a separate toilet for boys and girls and even much less a toilet with a ramp for better accessibility for all.
Our focus on providing children an access to clean toilets is rooted in our belief that children can be the agents of change - a child positively influencing a child, his/her family and finally the community. It is so important that children learn safe sanitation habits early in their life and bring a 'generation level' behaviour shift.
SVYM's WASH Program has been integrated into 300+ Govt Schools in Karnataka with a focus on both infrastructural(in some places) and behavioural aspects facilitating access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
On #worldtoiletday, we urge all to value access to clean toilets with hand washing facilities as a fundamental right for all children and communities at large.
