Padma Shree Awardee Sh*tal Mahajan Skydives At Mount Everest; Creates Another World Record
The well-known Indian skydiver Sh*tal Mahajan created history, making billions of people proud. She became the first female to ever jump off a helicopter from 21,500 feet in front of Mount Everest. She accomplished skydiving on the front side of Mount Everest, the world's tallest peak. Mahajan claimed that she had spent many years getting ready for this achievement that has set a new world record.
She made the greatest jump of her life, leaping from 21,500 feet in front of Mount Everest to 17,444 feet (5,317 meters) at Kala Patthar, which is the highest altitude landing ever made by a woman. Mahajan made the highest altitude landing by a woman skydiver. This is in addition to the two national records she has achieved. One for the highest altitude skydiving landing performed by a woman and the other for being the first Indian woman to skydive in front of Mount Everest at Kala Patthar.

The Hanle and Merak observatories in Ladakh, known for capturing images of the night sky, recently documented a rare sight in India-a vivid red aurora.
Auroras (also known as northern/southern lights) are luminous displays in the sky, occurring when solar particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field. Typically, this phenomenon is observed closer to the poles.
The Hanle observatory successfully captured the lights towards the northern horizon, while the Merak observatory, located on the banks of Pangong Tso, had its view obstructed by high mountains. Dorje Angchuk, the engineer in charge of the Hanle observatory, reported that the red auroral light was visible from 10 pm to midnight on November 5, with its peak intensity around 10:40 pm.
This marks the second aurora event captured by the Hanle observatory in 2023, the previous one occurring on April 23. Vemareddy, a solar astronomer from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics operating the observatory, explained that auroras are typically seen when solar flares release plasma, interacting with the Earth's magnetic field. Although more commonly visible near the poles, intense events may make them observable in places like India.
Expectations are high for an increased number of aurora events over the next two years. Vemareddy noted that solar flares follow an 11-year cycle, and as we are presently in the ascending phase, more flares are anticipated in the coming year. The cycle is expected to peak in 2025 before gradually decreasing.
Hanle, being India's only dark sky reserve, is an optimal location for observing such phenomena. Dark sky reserves implement measures to minimize artificial light pollution, providing an ideal environment for celestial observations.

A landmark memorial dedicated to remembering the Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War is nearing completion at Ashuganj, Bangladesh. Approximately 1,600 Indian soldiers lost their lives in the fight; their names will be included in this moving tribute. The memorial is anticipated to be completed by December, with the two countries' prime ministers set to inaugurate it in March or April.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated three Indian-assisted development projects via video conferencing on Wednesday, nearly a decade after India and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for setting up the first Indo-Bangla international railway connectivity in Northeast India in 2013
The three projects are the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, Khulna - Mongla Port Rail Line and Unit - II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Rampal, Bangladesh.
The inauguration of rail and power sector projects between India and Bangladesh lay focus on strengthened ties and partnership between the two countries.
The Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link project has been executed under a Government of India grant assistance of 392.52 crore extended to Bangladesh. The length of the rail link is 12.24 km with a 6.78 km Dual Gauge rail line in Bangladesh and 5.46 km in Tripura.
The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line Project has been implemented under the Government of India's concessional Line of Credit with a total project cost of USD 388.92 million.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, under an Indian Concessional Financing Scheme loan of 1.6 billion US dollars, is a 1320 MW Super Thermal Power Plant located in Rampal in Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The project has been implemented by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited which is a 50:50 Joint Venture company between India's NTPC Ltd & Bangladesh Power Development Board. These projects will strengthen connectivity & energy security in the region.
Indian tourists will be allowed visa-free entry to Thailand initially for a period of six months starting November 10, local media reported on Tuesday.
The announcement was made following a decision by the Thai Cabinet, which agreed to exempt tourists from India and Taiwan from requiring an entry visa to stay in Thailand for up to 30 days, effective May 10, 2024, according to a report by Thai PBN World.
