Baltal Valley in Sonmarg is a camping ground for pilgrims heading for Amarnath Yatra. It is a beautiful drive along river Sindh on Srinagar Leh highway. The valley in itself is mesmerizing with beautiful waterfalls, majestic views of the glaciers and snow clad mountains and, white gushing waters of Sindh river. The place is only open from March till September. Thajiwas glacier is a 4 km trek from here.

QUOTING Vikas: One of the last strongholds of Tibetan Buddhism lies in the Zanskar Valley. This valley in northern India is a high-altitude semi-desert, home to ancient monasteries, a few mud and stone villages, glacial streams and deep gorges. At its southern end stands guard the lofty Mt Gonbo Rangjon, considered to be holy by the local inhabitants who practice Tibetan Buddhism. Gonbo lies on the Darcha – Padum trek route and lies about 16kms south of the Kargiak village.

Till not so recent past, the valley was pretty much isolated from the rest of the world and life went on as it had for many centuries of the past. But that is all set to change now with the road construction over the Shinku-La pass connecting Manali to Padum which passes right below Mt. Gonbo. The road will bring prosperity and economic development to the region along with a lot of tourists.

The fascinating classic novel Lost Horizon (by James Hilton) has an enchanting description of a *cone shaped* mountain seen by the passengers in the hijacked plane as it makes its way from Peshawar towards its then-unknown destination (Shangri La) in the direction of Tibet! The mountain is described changing colors as the evening light changes and eventually assuming the appearance of a majestic cone of silver after the Moon comes up. One would not be surprised if this peak is the inspiration behind the story!!

Kashmir Valley, or Vale of Kashmir, was a resort for Mughal emperors, especially Jahangir during his reign in the early 17th century. Several beautiful gardens and buildings were constructed in the vale for his empress Nur Jahan.

Traveling to the greener pastures of Kashmir, Saral Lake is located in Neelam Valley at an altitude of 13,600 feet. One has to take a jeep from Sharda to Gumot National Park. From there, a small hike will take you to this serene lake.
