BONDERAM
By August, the fields brim with life. A drive through Divar takes you through long stretches of paddy crops ready for reaping. In such blissful environs you would be surprised that once mock battles were staged by the villagers and boundaries drawn to protect their fields. When questions arose on the method to demarcate boundary lines, the Portuguese government came up with the solution of using colourful bandeiras or flags. That’s where the festival got its name. And it still continues to be celebrated by two wards: Sao Piedade and Malar. Today this festival has achieved international fame and the day is prominently slotted in travel itineraries well in advance.

HAPPY FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER - OLD GOA

The Feast of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa is celebrated on 03rd December.
As a method of not disrupting the liturgy of the sabbath, if 3rd December is ever on a Sunday, the Feast is celebrated on the following Monday.
Hence, this year, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier is celebrated on 4th December.

Francis Xavier left Lisbon with a brief from the Pope appointing him as the nuncio to the East. He arrived in Goa, the former Portuguese colony on 6 May 1542, thirteen months after leaving Lisbon. He was invited to head the St Paul’s College, a pioneering seminary of education of secular priests that became the first Jesuit headquarters in Asia.
The relics of Saint Francis Xavier are kept at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa in a silver casket and the exposition is held every 10 years. They were placed here on 2nd December 1637 and have remained here since.
