By signing an agreement with the visiting Namibian Deputy Prime Minister in Delhi, India inches closer to reintroduce around eight Cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park before Independence Day. Cheetah, the world’s fastest animal, is the only large carnivore that has gone extinct in the country. In January 2020, the Supreme Court lifted a seven year stay order on the reintroduction of Asiatic Cheetahs. Since then, the Environment Minister, on World Wildlife Day 2021, mentioned that the project was making much progress.
Kuno National Park will have 600 hectare closed enclosure to house the Cheetahs. Kuno's carrying capacity is around 21 Cheetahs.
One of the issues lay in the genetic differentiation of Asiatic and African Cheetahs. The two subspecies diverged over 100,000 years ago. As the latter species has never existed in India, concerns regarding their reintroduction have been raised. This is partly because Asiatic Cheetahs are concentrated into a tiny isolated population and African Cheetahs are an invasive species.

Hoping for one more successful conservation and relocation project. Kudos to the conservationists and authorities working day and night to make this project a successful one.
