The Adi tribes celebrate a number of festivals, but Unying Aaran is the prime festival for them.
Unying Aran is one of the oldest festivals of the Adi community commemorating the arrival of spring season.

It is celebrated on 7th March to herald the season of shifting cultivation.

Unying Aran is basically a hunting festival followed by the Adi tribesmen. It is the first festival of the Adi ‘new year’.

It is the festival which unites all the members of the community and they all pray for the bumper harvest.
They celebrate this festival on ground with great enthusiasm and traditional rituals with intense and passionate feeling.

In this festival, it is tradition for all male members of a family to go on a hunting and stays in the jungles for a week.

The majority of Adi traditionally follow the tribal Donyi-Polo religion. Worship of gods and goddesses like Kine Nane, Doying Bote, Gumin Soyin and Pedong Nane, etc.

It is traditionally celebrated with ‘Bari’ songs sung by male elders and ‘Yakjong’ dance performed by youths (boys and girls) in villages. Through these performances, they narrate stories of the origin of the festival. Villagers also pray for the well-being of their tribesmen.

"Today might be a beginning. It might be an end. It might be a bend in the road or a straightaway. There are countless possibilities, especially just before dawn when the pale blue sky can't decide between stars and the first bright rays of sunlight."

Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things: air, sleep, dreams, sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.

Myoko Festival ~ A symbol of friendship and harmony among Apatani brothers & sisters.

May this joyous occasion bring happiness, peace and prosperity.

Heartiest greetings to all.

, , ,

The month-long Myoko festival is celebrated on a rotational basis among three communities; Diibo-Hija, Hari-Bulla, and Hong of the Apatani Plateau. The women sprinkle flour and rice beer on the pigs as they recite sacred prayers and mantras. Later the pigs are taken to the huts of their owners and are sacrificed.
Myoko is a spring festival celebrated when apricot trees start to bloom. This is a biggest celebration of Apatani community related to agriculture, spiritual, nature and communal harmony amongst the Apatani and its immediate neighbor Nyishi. Since most of the tribes in the region doesn't have their own script. So as far Apatani legend it's believed that they being a mongoloid stock migrated somewhere from Mongolia long time back. They were told to celebrate this Myoko festival by their ancestors wherever they settle down when the peach tree start to bloom, which they brought along with them.
This day you will witness a palm procession carried out by all the male member of the village. This is the ritual where they invoke the spirits of their departed ancestors to join the festival. A skull of long tailed macaque which they purposely hunt down for this ritual is used during the ceremony.
Apatani women traditional dancing in Michi village.
Myoko Festival to witness an animistic ritual of Apatani tribe and to enjoy the hospitality of the community. They have an early morning Pig offering ceremony by a married couple. This happen near an apricot tree. All the married couple willing to offer a pig brings a pig to this sacred altar called "Yugyang". Later these animals are sacrificed in the name of Myoko deity. Apatani has a unique way of killing this animal. A person is appointed for this work with an assistant. They are called 'Aha Pornw'. They move from house to house to take the heart out from the pigs. He cut the chest open of the pig when the animal is still alive and put his hand inside to grave the heart of the animal and pull it out and put it in the basket of hearts he has already taken. After this ritual he is taboo to take any food which doesn't belongs their community for more than a month. Dozens and dozens of pigs are slaughtered ritually. This appears one of the massive and bloody animistic ceremonies.
