The legendary Kumki of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Kaleem was given guard of honour and officially retired from his active service today in the presence of Hon. Principal Secretary to the State for Environment and Forests , Supriya Sahu IAS
“Tusker Kaleem belongs to the final batch of elephants captured before it was legally banned by the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. He was captured from Sathyamangalam Forests in 1972, and trained in the Varagaliyar camp, Anamalais. Initially trained by senior mahouts, Kaleem was assigned young Palanisamy as mahout in the 80s and they soon became a wonderful duo, and an inevitable component in all major capture, drive and rescue operations organised by Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
The team became famous not just in Tamil Nadu but also in other states such as Andhra Pradesh, where Kaleem led capture operation in Tirupati, and Kerala, where infamous Peppara Kolakolli operation was also led by Kaleem. After Palanisamy succumbed to his health ailments in 2011, his nephew Mani was put in charge the same year and he started taking Kaleem for operations from 2012. The following year, Kaleem led the famous Operation Malai where six elephants were captured in a single operation in a single day.
Kaleem’s extraordinary skills include extreme cooperation during operations with all team members, allowing free interactions and non-aggression, being silent during tracking operations, and steadily asserting dominance to any sized elephant, be it Makhna or tusker or female, during drive operations, safeguarding entire team’s safety and well being.
The year 2023 marks 51st year of his service to the Department that his retirement falls at the right occasion. And there is no other way of celebrating his achievements but by supporting his health and well being through announcing a well deserved retirement from his services. Wishing Kaleem all health and a long life ahead that he will now serve as an exemplar of how a celebrated tusker who

Reposted from @project.dhvani - “We are excited to present our ongoing work - ‘Sounds of Restoration’. Here, we showcase the use of audio recorders to monitor the impacts of ecological restoration on biodiversity in the Western Ghats. Over the last two decades, @ncf.india has been ecologically restoring degraded forest fragments across the Valparai plateau in the Anamalai hills. While the restoration work has helped these forests recover, the question remains - how successful has this work been in bringing back the animals which once inhabited these forests?
Eavesdropping on the sounds of the forests can tell us about the species that live there and thus, the health of the habitat. We at Project Dhvani listened to the forests of Valparai by placing audio recorders across different forest types in order to understand how bird species have responded to ecological restoration and how the soundscapes of each forest vary from each other.”

Reposted from @hadlee_renjith WHY do Wag-tails wag their tails?
Wagtails are exclusively insectivores and their tails are an enormous benefit to them in catching food.
They have two distinct techniques that they use.
Firstly, when picking insects off the ground they walk or run along repeatedly picking up small items and chasing more mobile prey such as beetles and small spiders. Their tails will be seen wagging and snapping up and down or even to the sides, apparently to flush insects.
The other feeding method that wagtails use is flycatching, moving from a perch off the ground or even sometimes intermittently or continuously hovering to snap at flying insects. Quite often when flycatching, wagtails take the prey using a zig-zag flight, tumbling and circling with the tail acting as a rudder.

At Pollachi Papyrus, we always strive to showcase the best of Anamalais in the most unique way possible. We have come up with a new series of photo stories using animated photographs to kindle the imagination of the viewer, yet holding back on what the place has to offer.
"After a long break from work, I was really excited to get back with my crew at Pollachi Papyrus. We spent 2 days together and discussed with Pravin about the new photo series I wanted to do. Nothing makes me happier than shooting elephants in their natural habitat, but in this case it was the elephant camp. Only here can one get a chance to get decently close to the animals. I wouldn't have imagined to do such a thing with wild elephants. I totally enjoyed making this series and hope to continue experimenting with various other subjects that we focus to showcase in Pollachi Papyrus"

While there's so much to see and observe during these rainy days, it's only natural for us to feed our eyes on the stunning natural vistas around. But it's by looking #downtoearth we shall behold the true wonders of #Monsoon.
This edition we invited Karthikeyan Srinivasan (chief naturalist, JLR) to pen down the cover story - "Down to Earth" elaborating the wildlife wonders that bring about a vibrant change to the already vivid monsoon fed landscape of Pollachi and the Anamalais.
