Viper Island in the Andaman Islands is a small, historic place with a big story.
This island was once used as a jail during British rule in India.
It’s famous for housing the ruins of a jail where prisoners, including political ones, were kept.
One of the notable prisoners was Sher Ali, an Afghan prince. The island gets its name from the venomous snakes that used to inhabit it.
Today, visitors can take a boat ride to explore the remnants of the jail and learn about its intriguing past.
Viper Island stands as a reminder of the region’s history and is a place to reflect on the struggles faced during colonial times.
Viper Island was used as a place of exile for women prisoners.
It housed female convicts and political prisoners, where they were confined in the jail on the island.

The conditions were harsh, and it served as a place of punishment for women who were deemed threats or had committed various offenses according to the British colonial administration’s laws at that time.
