Winter is my favorite time in the forest. The woods are luxuriant, the fragrance of their musty undergrowth enhanced by glittering drops of dew.
Silently emerging from the depth of the jungle, tigers fiercely sport their winter coats, bright orange and thick, the exuberant signature of nature’s perfection.
Some forests are at their best and most active in winter. So are most of the Sal forests, their mysteries best explored when shrouded in an eerie morning mist.
Corbett National Park, and within it the Dhikala zone, is one of them. The epitome of the winter forest.
As I am gearing up for winter, I look forward to once again visit this remarkable place, magic and inspiring when graced by the light of the cold season.

Riddhi’ two boisterous male cubs, posing for our camera during my last private tour to Ranthambhore.
It’s always special when a tiger family graces the road of the lakes area, perhaps India’s most iconic tiger habitat.
It’s time to plan your summer safari, if you wish to witness this very active time in the life of tigers, sub-adulthood.
It’s the time of playful fights and discovery of hunting techniques, skills that will be useful when they’ll go their own way to search for a territory of their own.

Panna Tiger Reserve’s popularity has risen over the last few years. The reason? A scenic, diverse habitat that reminds of a few other illustrious parks, a growing tiger population, result of a successful re-introduction program, and a relatively off the beaten track reputation.
Sighting a tiger on the banks of the Ken river is not uncommon, even from the recently re-opened boat safari.
This is P141 female, a mother with a litter of small cubs, who graced us with a long walk in this beautiful habitat, before disappearing in the thick undergrowth.

Have you ever locked eyes with a wild tiger? How did that feel?
There is nothing like that stare, so different from the human one and yet so intense.

One of the highlights of our recently concluded trip to Botswana was the sighting of big wild dog packs on multiple times.
The African wild dog, also called Painted dog because of multicolor patches on its coat, is an extremely interesting and alas very endangered animal.
Their social behavior and their incredibly organized hunting technique is fascinating to watch.
We were lucky to see many individuals and among those many puppies, whose energetic moves were a real treat to our eyes!

Have you ever seen an antilope smile?
As cute as it seems, this behaviour of the Steenbok antilope is a savvy defense mechanism.
In case of perceived danger they would freeze, stand still among the tall grass, lowering their ears, to fool the predators into believing they are just part of the vegetation.

The most precious secret of the Indian forest.
There is nothing as satisfying as seeing a tiger in a less frequented park.
Here is a young male on his territory patrol, marking a ghost tree in the woods of Satpura.

What’s the most unforgettable wildlife experience you’ve ever had?
I value all of them, and even after so many safaris I can marvel at the sight of any majestic big cat.
But one experience stands out from the others: looking for the elusive snow leopard in the wild.
It’s a proper expedition, at high altitude, one that will make you face your limits and maybe reveal your true self.
It’s a life-changing experience, one of the toughest but also one of the most rewarding.
Are you up for it?
We have a few seats left for this upcoming winter, batches led by yours truly. DM for all details.

Have you ever visited a tiger reserve with the (not so) secret wish to see a specific tiger?
Although I generally try to discourage these thoughts - a tiger is a tiger after all, not an undignified item to be chosen from a menu - there is a certain magnetism to those who stand out because of their unique personality.
Chota Matka is surely such an individual. Arguably one of the most famous tigers alive, the CM (Chief Minister) of Tadoba buffer is fondly thus called because of the hilarious habit of inspecting every feature of the area while on his territory patrol.
It is not unusual to see him sniffing the doors of the ticket counter at the gate of the park or parading its impressive build on the stairs of the Ramdegi temple, seemingly paying its respects to an ancient deity.
Or like here, caught in the act of inspecting the wiring of a solar panel, one of the most important installations that provide water to all animals in the heat of summer.
Have you ever seen Chota Matka?

Second part of the mischievous lion cubs series from Masai Mara 🦁
After having sparred and tackled each other for a while, they proceeded to wake up all the members of the pride, one by one.
Needless to say, the adults were less than happy to be disturbed during their deep slumber.
