Following the footsteps of JB Auden.
John Bicknell Auden was brother of renowned poet WH Auden. He was a pioneering and geologist of the Himalayas. John Auden and Michael Spender (another English explorer and surveyor) vied to be included in the expedition that would deliver an Englishman to the summit of Everest.
Auden and Michael collaborated on a cartographic expedition of the Himalayas. Auden left for India in 1926. Desirous of conquering the Everest, he patiently surveyed the to ascertain when and how the ranges were formed. Spender brought in his expertise at photogrammetry, the science of interpreting and measuring landscapes through photographs, for the development of topographical maps. His skills aided Britain in the war effort.

JB Auden was the first European to get a close-up view of the south face of Mt. Everest.

Flowers are so venerated in Kinnaur that some festivals (like Ukhyang / Phulaich) are dedicated to them. The literal meaning of Ukhyang or Phulaich, is Flower Festival. Ukhyang is portmanteau of Uoo (flower) + Khyang (to see). This is major celebration time in Kinnaur. Festival timings vary greatly over
the length of the Satluj valley, spreading out over two months, from the balmy days of early September in places like Rupi, to the frosty nights of November in the Bhaba valley. The actual celebrations at any one place, generally last from three to seven days. Bringing special
flowers from the pastures to honour the gods, is an essential ingredient in all areas. Many villages move entirely to pasture locations, for many days of song and dance. Ancestors are remembered through gifts of food and drink and the oracles perform magical feats to display the prowess of their gods. Needles are often stuck through the cheeks and the tongue, empty vessels filled with liquor and forecasts made about the future. The villages of the Baspa valley and upper Tukpa pride
themselves on their Ukhyang celebrations. The Baspa valley has its Ukhyang in the first week of September with upper Tukpa following
about ten days later.

And the earth itself. It smells differently in different places. But its loveliest fragrance is known only when it receives a shower of rain. And then the scent of wet earth rises as though it were giving something beautiful back to the clouds—a blend of all the fragrant things that grow in it.
