"What have you guys been up to lately? Haven't heard from you in a while."
We've heard this a lot lately. It's fair - we've been quiet. Let's just say we're in a bit of a chrysalis stage, with (hopefully) good things to come.
In the meantime, we reflected on 2024 with gratitude. From new kayak festivals to running new rivers, and all kinds of adventures in between, we had a solid year. Big thanks to everyone who was a part of it! We invite you to read our annual gratitude blog to learn more: https://www.expeditionsindia.com/latest-news/2024/01/15/grateful-in-2024
Wishing you all good things for 2025. We'll post more this year, promise.

2023 was a challenging year on multiple levels. We haven't been great about staying in touch. But when it came to writing our annual gratitude blog -- we didn't want to break tradition, and besides, reflecting on what we're grateful for always helps to put things in perspective. So here it is, a little late but no less sincere. (Link in bio.)
Big thanks to all of the people and places who continue to enrich our lives with their love and support! Wishing you all the best for 2024!

The last several months have also brought loss, as rivers took the lives of two friends:
We met Max Benetton at the back in 2014 and were impressed with not only his paddling skills, but also his genuine kindness and the respect he showed to everyone he encountered.
Stanzin Tanfan paddled multiple rivers with us, including the Kameng in 2018. He was a great paddler and exhibited incredible leadership qualities.
Sending peace and prayers to the friends and families of these good men.

As promised, a small update from the last few months:
Anvesh worked in the USA this summer with based in Ashland, Oregon. He was fortunate to be able to work on the Rogue, Upper Klamath, Owyhee, Salmon, Cal Salmon, and Scott Rivers in Oregon, Idaho and California. He also had an epic trip with friends on the Chilko in British Columbia in August. (Pics on the way.)
Due to the snowpack, flows were good this summer. There were wildfires on the Rogue and Salmon - unfortunately becoming a new normal these days.
Finally, a shout out to the guides and staff at . What an amazing, experienced and international group of river people!

It's been a minute. We haven't posted in a looong time, mostly because we've been busy, but also because our relationship with social media is changing. (Maybe you can relate?)
We'll post our updates in the next couple of days.

Our annual gratitude blog is out! Join us as we reflect on ten things we're grateful for in 2022. (Link in bio.)
Big thanks to those who supported and inspired us in 2022. Special shout out to friendships this year, which feel more precious than ever. Also a special shout out to Jangu , Manish , Vik , and our friends from the Siang corridor: Oken , Nino, Anand, Kishon , Okit and Akoying, who made our trips on the Kameng and Upper Siang extra special.
Wishing you and yours a bright start to 2023 and an adventurous year ahead! ✨✨✨ We hope to meet you around the campfire in the coming year.

And of course we can't forget our Kameng Expedition in November. Our beaches had elephant, leopard and tiger tracks, we had clear weather throughout (not one rainy day - rare in the NE!), local residents made us feel at home, the flows were good and the Class 5 section had a new rapid, our group felt more like a friends than guests, and to top it all off, one evening a snake joined us around the campfire.
The Kameng was as special as ever.

YES we ran the Upper Siang at the end of November.
YES it was epic with big, BIG water.
YES we are grateful to the guests and crew who came together to make this such an incredible trip.
YES we happened to take an organic break from social media right at the same time, hence the photo drop only now. (Sorry about that.)
YES we will run the Upper Siang again next year. ;)
03/11/2022
In a few days we begin the drive to NE India where we will be running a kayak trip on the Kameng River, followed by a raft trip on the Siang (Upper Brahmaputra). We look forward to immersing in the wisdom of traditional cultures and lush landscapes, running epic whitewater...and maybe even snacking on a frog or two! (Check out that last pic.)
Follow along for posts from the road and then a whole lot of silence during November as we check out of coverage area and check into the jungle.
Expeditions Northeast, here we come.

The thing is, it's really hard to take photos when you're busy.
Nevertheless, here are a few random behind-the-scenes pics from Meghalaya Kayak Festival and beyond.
Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed and the organizers and volunteers who made it happen (shoutout to ). It was good to help out.
Now we're exploring the NE in preparation for some upcoming trips. It is tremendously beautiful here. Pics coming soon.
You can see it for yourself. There is still space on our Brahmaputra Expedition, Nov 26-Dec 7. Get in touch today: adventure@ expeditionsindia.com

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the recent loss of two friends.
Our friend and colleague, Narendra Singh, was part of the NIM Advanced Mountaineering Course on Mt Draupadi ka Danda-II in which an avalanche recently took the lives of many. ‘Tichkule’, as he was affectionately known, will be missed dearly. (pics 1-3, with Narendra’s big smile and fierce moustache)
Our friend and colleague, Rory, as well as his wife, lost their lives in a senseless act of violence in the United States. Many years ago, Rory was the first one to suggest that Anvesh should join NOLS. Anvesh saw him in Idaho this summer, not thinking it was the last time. (Pics 4-6, from the first river trip on the Kali in which Rory was guiding for NOLS and Anvesh was assisting and one of Rory from our friend )
Our sincere condolences go out to all of the friends and family of these fine folks. You’ll be missed. ❤️

*Confirmed departure*
Brahmaputra Expedition
Nov 26-Dec 7, 2022
Join us on what promises to be an epic adventure on the big waters of the Brahmaputra. This trip is a big commitment in terms of time, money and energy, but is also the trip of a lifetime. Let's break them down one by one:
Money commitment: We crunched the numbers for our friends in the USA. The total cost for you, including our trip cost, return airline tickets USA to Delhi, return airline ticket Delhi to Dibrugarh, and all Visa fees, works out to be around $3500. (We'll help you through all the steps!) Compare that to a 12-day trip on the Grand Canyon which costs $5600 for the trip alone.
Time commitment: With travel to Dibrugarh, this 12-day trip turns into more like two weeks. That's a lot of time to ask for work off. We think it's worth it. We also know there are lots of you out there on flexible schedules who can swing this, no problem.
Energy commitment: Waking up on remote sandy beaches every day, facing 50,000 cfs waters, exploring the jungle and generally adapting to the rhythm of river life isn't for everyone. But if you have a feeling that it's for you, give us a call and let's talk about it.
If you feel that the Brahmaputra is your next adventure, get in touch: +91-9412050090 or [email protected]

Summer 2022 photo dump.
We are grateful to all of the people and places that made this summer so special including the Salmon, Teton, Upper Klamath and Rogue Rivers, and many more!
We're back in India now and looking forward to the coming months. Stay tuned for some news...

A couple of weeks ago the team reached the Pacific Ocean after skiing and paddling the length of the Salmon River, drawing attention to the plight of the salmon along the way. We were honoured to meet them in Astoria, OR, USA and celebrate their tremendous accomplishment! We’ve been deeply inspired by their passion in combining advocacy with their love of rivers, as well as their humility in shining a light on these issues that many people have been working on for years.
Most importantly, they have turned us into salmon advocates! We wrote our postcards and are keeping up with the latest news. You can learn more at or check out three excellent podcasts on the issues from .
How does this connect to our work in India? The potential loss of endangered Chinook, Sockeye, and Steelhead populations should drawn concern from the global community, especially river advocates. In addition, perhaps such a journey could inspire our community to draw attention to issues facing Indian rivers?
Thank you, , for your incredible project and inspiration! We hope that and .tobey visit India some day soon!

The River: A Deep Ecology Visual Poem
We wanted to share this gorgeous river poem with you in celebration of International Day of Action for Rivers, March 14, 2014!
We are a committed team of river professionals offering epic whitewater river rafting and kayaking expeditions throughout the Indian Himalaya. Read our story:
Since 1996, our founder and director, Anvesh Singh Thapa, has been rafting and kayaking throughout the world. Though he's guided trips in Ethiopia, Norway, New Zealand, and the USA, he has always returned home to India, to the land and rivers he loves. For over a decade, Anvesh was the Operations Manager at one of India's top adventure companies. During those years he experienced first hand the increasing commercialization of the river rafting industry in India, often at the expense of the environment. In 2008, Anvesh decided to venture out on his own and commit to something different: small-scale, low-impact river adventures that are personal and hands on.
When Anvesh met Ing-Marie Putka in 2012, they immediately recognised their shared interests. With a Master's degree in International Environmental Studies, Ing-Marie has worked toward personal and planetary sustainability since she moved to India in 2005. Anvesh and Ing-Marie agreed that many conflicts in today's world stem from our disconnection from nature. Together they began to innovate ways to get people into the outdoors in the best way possible.
Since then, Expeditions India has focused on quality over quantity. Each of our adventures is consciously crafted to be good for you, the bioregion, and the planet. We pride ourselves in rigorous safety standards, environmental and social sustainability, and epic adventures. In addition, we are committed to showing you the very best that India has to offer. All of the river trips we offer are located in India, a country that we love dearly and that is filled with countless adventures that we're always ready to explore.
So that's our story. We're thinking globally and acting very, very locally. At the heart of it all, we believe that when people intimately experience the wilderness, they are more inclined to preserve it.
