SALEM SANGEETHA VIDWATH SABHA is reincarnation(2007) of Sadguru Thyagabramha Aaaradhana Mahotsava Trust that in it self was reinvention of originally established “Sangeetha Samrakshana Sabha”.Sangeetha Samrakshana Sabha was established in 1958-59 by late GanakalaChandra “Salem G.Desikan” ably assisted then by connoisseurs of music such as M
r.A.P Koil N.Sapthgirisan, Kalaimamani Rathnappa, late Mr,Chalapuram papa ,eminent musician such as late Mr.Chellam Iyengar etc. This small group were the pioneers in promoting and sustaining the traditional carnatic music in Salem that is very much nearer Erode Town which witnessed the uprising of Dravidian movement by the person reverentially called Thiru Ee Ve RA in that time frame. It has always been the case in the history of any country that unless financial patrons are there Fine Arts would not have been what it is today. As for the Salem samrakshana Sabha ,the same was nourished by the families of A.V.R.Kumbakonam Silver shop (Mr.Santhagopalan and Mr.Sudharshanam)and M/s.Narasus coffee works(Mr.Sarathy chettiar) and Sekar Minerals belonging to late prof. Rajamani Iyer and late Mr.Subramanim of Annapoorna Hotels. After the demise of Salem G.Desikan under the new name Sadguru Thyagabramha Aaaradhanai Mahotsava Sabha,the mantle was carried over by Mr.Rathnappa,Mr.Eachankudi ramamoorty, G.sundaram,Mr.Jagannathan and Salem borthers being Mr.Vasudevan and Krishnamoorthy, besides Smt Neela madam and the sabha had been annually conducting the Thiagaraja Aaradhani Vizha as respectful homage to one of the Music trinity as one or two days function. So when the applicants for slot to pay musical homage to Sadguru during Aaradhana festival grew up, the aaradhanai committee thought of inducting three like minded chartered accountants in the managing committee to reorganize the whole thing. And then “SALEM SANGEETHA VIDWATH SABHA ” dawned as registered trust as new avatar. The initial secretary late CA.Mr.K.Shankar ably assisted by CA.R.Chandrasekar and CA.J.Srinivasan with guarded guidance from Mr.Eachangudi mama, late Sri.Vasudevan, Mr.Rathnappa and host of other spirited personalities and the patrons as above gave new dimension to Sabha with programmes as under. Unfortunately as ill luck would have it ,the dynamic secretary K.R.Shankar took heavenly abode at the young age in January 2012 and there after secretary CA.J.Srinivasan and treasurer CA.R.Chandrasekaran have been managing the affairs of the trust
i).Annual Sadguru Aaradhana Vizha in May of each calendar year(with bagula pancahmi thithi)in all its piety and orthodoxy with Unchaviruthi and rendition of Pancha ratna Keerthanas followed by Divya nama sangeerthanam of sadguru. ii).In tandem with the above aaradhana function, two or three days before and after aaradhana date,(totally six days) the sabha conducts the function called “SALETHIL THIRUVAIYARU” that provides platform for all carnatic music teachers, students and other aspirants of carnatic music in perfect holy ambience stage with violin and mirudangam accompaniments. In the last edition of “SalethilThiruvaiyaru”2014,as many as 360 students participated. The daily programme starts with Nadaswara Mangala Isai by 7.30AM to 8.30.am followed by students rendition of thiyagaraja krithies in their allotted time slot till late evening 6.30 pm. Then the main concert of reputed senior vidwan begins and the day end up at 9.30 PM followed by dinner for all and sundry financed exclusively by a chartered accountant of this place.(for about three to four hundred persons). This aspect of providing dinner at the conclusion of day’s function (since 2013 version)is to see the family-audience to focus their attention to music and music alone without botheration of going back to home late in night and prepare dinner for family. Conducting music competition at the behest of “KTC Trust for CES support” palghat and awarding prices to winners in all disciplines of carnatic music held in April of each calendar year since 2013. Every month fourth Sunday carnatic music concert was conducted under the aegis of Sri Krishna Sweets of Coimbatore, Federation of culture and arts, thiruppur under the banner titled “EPPADI PADINARO” from 2007 till Feb 2013.Therafter the Sabha itself was managing the series till 31-12-14. From January 2015 onwards this EPPADIPADINARO series is being partly sponsored by charity personified AVR Swarna mahal family. With the increased spirited participation by the public and the performers , the management has future ideas of increased activities befitting the long and rich tradition of carnatic music, vakeyakarars, and discerning public with cherished goal of piety and orthodoxy. Salem - 636 001. THAT THE FOUNDATION FOR THE TRUST IS SO STRONG IS TO BE GAUGED BY THE FACT THAT IT WAS THE INITIATIVE OF SALEM G.DESIKAN ABOUT WHOSE AUTHORITY ON CARNATIC MUSIC, THE FOLLOWING FEW WORDS WOULD VOUCH FOR
In about 2009 at the launch of the MP3 CD of the songs collection of late Ganakalachandra Desikan at Chennai at the hands of eminent music-duo M/S.B.V.RAMAN & B.V.LAKSHMANAN, rich tributes were poured and G.DESIKAN was acclaimed as musician of musicians. He was not only great Voaclist but also a great Veena exponent .Late Mr.Veenai Balachnadar was close musical friend of G.Desikan and they shared very many ideas about this vadyam and its applications. In fact shri Veenai Balachandar performed at the reception of desikan’s daughter’s marriage. It is note worthy that all the contemporary stalwarts of his time and stars- in- the- making at that time such as revered Lalgudi Jayaraman, T.N.Seshagopalan visited his home and exhibited their musical skills as a mark of respect for G.Desikan and for course correction!. Maama desikan’s music is replete with unique ideas, interesting sangathis, trend setting method of raga aalapana. Desikan was fond of Nalinakanthi raga in which he used to elaborate for one hour without any repetition of sangathis and phrases as Madurai G.S.Mani once made in nostalgic mood. All songs of G.Desikan available with his family members and friends in tape form were collected and compiled as MP3 CD by Mr.A.P.Koil .N.Sapthagirisan and Mr.S.Venkatachary of Bombay and are put to public domain .Just google youtube salem G.desikan and immerse yourself in music.
