शेकरू महाराष्ट्र राज्याचा राज्यपशू आहे.
अतिशय देखणा असा हा प्राणी झपाट्याने दुर्मिळ होणाऱ्या प्रजातीतील एक आहे. सह्याद्रीच्या रांगांमध्ये दाट जंगलात याचे वास्तव्य असते.
अलीकडे मात्र तळकोकणात वस्त्यालगत त्याची संख्या नजरेला भरण्याइतकी वाढली आहे. विशेषतः सह्याद्रीलगत असलेल्या नारळ, पोफळींच्या बागांमध्ये हा प्राणी हमखास दर्शन देऊ लागला आहे. दाट लाल रंगाचा, आकर्षक शेपटी असलेल्या शेकरूच्या जोड्या नारळाच्या बागांमधून लीलया उड्या मारताना दिसतात. पूर्वी इतक्‍या सहज वस्त्यांलगत त्याचे दर्शन होत नसे. या प्राण्याकडून विशेषतः नारळाचे मोठे नुकसानही होत आहे. काही ग्रामीण भागात याची शिकार देखील केली जाते.

खारीच्या वर्गात येणारा हा प्राणी आकाराने मोठा असतो. त्यालाच इंग्रजीमध्ये Indian Giant Squirrel किंवा Malabar Giant Squirrel असे म्हणतात.
भारतात जायंट स्क्विरल प्रजातीच्या च्या एकूण ७ उपप्रजाती आढळतात. त्यापैकी 'राटूफा इंडिका' (RATUFA INDICA) ही उपप्रजाती फक्त महाराष्ट्रात आढळते.
