“Temples of India”

The ancient city of Madurai, more than 2,500 years old, was built by the Pandyan king, Kulashekarar, in the 6th century B.C. But the reign of the Nayaks marks the golden period of Madurai when art, architecture and learning flourished expansively. The most beautiful buildings in the city including its most famous landmark, the Meenakshi temple, were built during the Nayak rule.

Located in the heart of the city of Madurai, the Meenakshi-Sundareshwarar temple is dedicated to goddess Meenakshi, the consort of lord Shiva. It has long been the focus of both Indian and international tourist attraction as well as one of the most important places of Hindu pilgrimage. For the people of Madurai, the temple is the very center of their cultural and religious life.

It is said that the people of the city wake up, not by the call of nature but by the chant of hymns at the temple. All the major festivals of Tamil Nadu are celebrated here with gaiety, most important being the Chitrai festival that is held in April/May, when the celestial marriage of Meenakshi & Sundareshwarar is celebrated, drawing a huge crowd of people from all over the state.

The sculpted pillars are adorned with the exquisite murals that celebrate the ethereal beauty of princess Meenakshi and the scenes of her wedding with Lord Shiva. At the Sundareswarar temple across the courtyard, Lord Shiva is represented as a lingam. The pillars depict scenes from the wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. There are 985 richly carved pillars here and each one surpasses the other in beauty.

The birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is celebrated as Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti with much fervor across the world. It falls on a full moon day in the month of Vaisakh (April/May) according to the Hindu calendar

It is also observed as the day when Buddha, born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama (c. 563-483 BCE) attained Nirvana (salvation) under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, Bihar, as well as his death anniversary. The Vesak full moon day is the most important day in the Buddhist calendar. Several Buddhists go to the pagodas to pour water at the foot of the sacred tree in remembrance of the Buddha’s Enlightenment.

Devotees of Buddha visit temples, light candles and incense sticks, pray and offer sweets and fruits before the statue of Lord Buddha. Sermons on the life and teachings of Buddha are held and attended by followers all over. People usually dress in white, do not consume non-vegetarian food and distribute kheer, according to Buddhist lore, on this day a woman named Sujata had offered Buddha a bowl of milk porridge

Akshaya Tritiya is a day dedicated to Lord Vishnu - the preserver of the Universe. According to Hindu mythology, the Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya. On most years, Akshaya Tritiya also coincides with the Parashurama Jayanti. Lord Parashurama is the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Since Akshaya Tritiya is an auspicious day, many people like to buy gold or silver items as it is believed that buying precious metals bring prosperity and good luck to the family. On Akshaya Tritiya, people perform puja and yajna for particular purposes. Charitable works are an important part of the day. Devotees distribute grains, clothes, and other items among the poor to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Shakuntala : The Single Solitary Mother

Just Like Mother- Sita, there is one more dignity in Hindu Mythology who broke every record in bringing up his only Child-Bharat into a noble and majestic man. Shakuntala was the single sole mother, who brought up her son in the forest after challenging the father. She was the daughter of Sage-Vishwamitra and the Apsara Menaka. She always took a good care of his only son from the pain of renunciation and sufferings.

The story of the birth of Lord Hanuman goes several centuries back to the era of Ramayan. He was the son of an apsara (a type of female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture) named Anjana and Kesari (a male vanara). In some interpretations, Hanuman is said to be an incarnation of Rudra who has been referred to as the ‘mightiest of the mighty’ in the ancient scriptures. Several versions of ancient stories also mention Hanuman to be the son of Vayu, the God of wind.

The devotees worship Lord Hanuman by putting vermillion on their foreheads from his idol. Legend says that once Lord Hanuman saw Goddess Sita applying vermillion on her forehead for the long life of her husband Lord Ram. Hanuman, being a true devotee of Lord Ram, smeared his entire body with vermilion so that his lord becomes immortal. Thus, Lord Hanuman’s idol is usually seen to be full of vermilion. On the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, devotees also observe fasts and carry out puja along with other rituals to seek the blessings of the Lord who is considered to be the most powerful in all lokas (realms).

History and significance

Ram Navami is recorded in Rama recitals, especially in Ramayana which is considered one of the two great Sanskrit epics of the Hindu religion. The story of Ram Navami is also called the Vratha Katha.

It describes how King Dashratha and his three queens - Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra performed the Putra Kamesti Yagna on the advice of Rishi Vashishth, when neither of King Dashratha’s wives was able to bear him an heir. After the yagna, the three queens were given kheer, which was blessed by Yajna, Lord of Yagna.

The queens conceived soon after they consumed the kheer and on the ninth day of Chaitra month, Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Rama. Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrugana were born to the other queens.

Ram Navami is one of the biggest Hindu festivals and is celebrated in a number of ways. Some devotees bathe and dress up miniature idols of Rama, lit a lamp in front of the idol and then place these idols in a cradle to mark his birth while kheer is prepared as an offering to God.
