Canada Extends Validity of Interim Work Authorization Letters for International Graduates

Interim work authorization is required for an international graduate to work in Canada while waiting for a decision on their Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

IRCC increases the validity of interim work authorization letters to 180 days from the previous 120 days.

With an interim work authorization letter, an international graduate can begin working in Canada even while they await the grant of a PGWP.

Canada Invites 1,980 in Express Entry Draw #290

1,980 Canadian permanent residence hopefuls get invitations under the Express Entry system.Those invited can now proceed to submitting their complete application for a Canada PR visa by Express Entry.

Applications submitted under the Express Entry system have a processing standard of within 6 months. Launched in 2015, Express Entry is an online application management system used by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

The latest Express Entry round of invitations was a general draw. Candidates who received invitations had a minimum score of CRS 524 and were eligible for either - FSWP, FSTP, CEC, or PNP.

485,000 Canada PR visas will be issued in 2024. Many of these will be through the Express Entry system. 67 points are needed to create an Express Entry profile.

Australia Updates IELTS Requirement for International Students

Australia puts in place new language requirements for international students. The updated IELTS requirements were initially announced on December 11, 2023. These will now come into effect from March 23, 2024.

The Australian government is updating the language requirements as part of its Migration Strategy that aims to bring Australian immigration back to the pre-pandemic levels.

Updating the language requirements will make international students more aligned with the Australian labour market. The IELTS update will be applicable to -

● Temporary Graduate (subclass 485)

Canada Express Entry: 2,850 Invitations in a General Draw

2,850 Canadian immigration hopefuls have received invitations to apply. Those invited are now a step closer to getting their Canada PR visa.

60 days are allotted - from the date of issue of the invitation to apply (ITA) - to submit a complete Canadian permanent residence application.

485,000 foreign nationals will be granted permanent residency in Canada in 2024. Of these, many will be through the Express Entry system.

Saskatchewan Holds the First SINP Draw of 2024

Saskatchewan selects 35 candidates in the latest round of invitations. This is the first draw to be held in 2024 by the province under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). The minimum score requirement was EOI 89.

Candidates invited by Saskatchewan belonged to any 1 of the 26 targeted occupations.

Generally, they were required to have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). Of the total 35 invitations, 21 were for Express Entry candidates. The other 14 were for those eligible for the Occupations In-Demand category
Both Saskatchewan Express Entry and Occupations In-Demand come under SINP’s International Skilled Worker program.

Ontario Issues 2,104 Invitations to Healthcare Professionals

Ontario picks up healthcare professionals from the Express Entry pool of Immigrants, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

On March 7, 2024, there were 2,104 invitations issued by Ontario PNP under a targeted draw exclusively for healthcare professionals. The invitations were issued under the Human Capital Priorities (HCP) stream.

Ontario PNP’s HCP is linked with the Express Entry system. So far, a total of 12,427 invitations have been issued by Ontario PNP to Express Entry candidates in 2024.

Australia to Launch New MATES Migration Scheme for Indians

Australia and India have entered a migration deal. Under the new migration scheme, 3,000 Indians a year can live and work in Australia for up to 2 years.

Later in 2024, the Australian government will start accepting applications from Indian nationals under MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme). No sponsorship required.

Canada Extends Post-Graduation Work Permit Validity for Masters

Master’s graduates can now get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for 3 years even if their studies have been for less than 2 years (minimum 8 months). Previously, they could get a PGWP with the same validity as the duration of their program.

The extension of post-study work permits has been announced for Master’s graduates. This is in recognition of their possessing the most potential to contribute to the Canadian labour market.

Masters’ graduates also have a higher chance of settling down permanently in Canada as permanent residents.

The PGWP validity extension will make it easier for Masters’ graduates to acquire the Canadian work experience required to apply for a Canada PR visa.

Canada Invites 3,500 Healthcare Professionals Through Express Entry

Canada is prioritizing healthcare professionals under category-based selection for Express Entry. Altogether 6 categories have been selected by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada

German Parliament Approves Easing Citizenship Rules

Settling in Germany becomes easier. The new German immigration law 2024 has been approved by the German Parliament. On February 2, 2024, the Bundesrat – Federal Council – gave the green signal to proposed changes in citizenship law.

In a historic move, the German Bundestag (federal parliament) has passed the motion seeking extensive changes in the citizenship law

However, a full implementation of the new German citizenship law requires the proposed changes to be accepted by the German Bundesrat (legislative body).

Residency requirement reduced from 6-8 years to 5 years. Apply for German citizenship after 3 years with special integration accomplishments.

Canada Grants 471,550 PR Visas in 2023 Exceeding Annual Target

Canada is committed to building a stronger immigration system. 471,550 new permanentresidents were welcomed in 2023. In 2022, Canada granted 437,600 PR visas.

In 2023, there were 10,89,600 Canadian Study Permit applications finalized. This is an increase of 1,71,700 over the 9,17,900 study permit applications that were decided in 2022.

16,46,300 applications for Work Permits for Canada were finalized in the same period. The number stood at 11,43,000 in 2022.

IRCC continues to review and improves its processes to -

● Use technology for supporting employees, and

● Speed up processing.

Canada is focussing on reducing backlogs to achieve the aim of processing 80% applications within the service standard.

IEC is for nationals of 30+ countries that want to live and work in Canada on a temporary basis. Citizens of countries that have a bilateral agreement - Youth Mobility Arrangement - with Canada are eligible. Individuals between the ages of 18 to 35 can apply.

Work permits given under the IEC do not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). An IEC participant can secure a Canadian work permit through any of the three pathways. Their eligibility to apply will be as per the specific agreement between that country and Canada.
