Rev. Thomas Jones (24 January 1810 – 16 September 1849) was a Welsh Christian missionary, who worked among the Khasi people of Meghalaya and Assam in India and of Bangladesh. He recorded the Khasi language in Roman script, and the inscription on his gravestone calls him "The founding father of the Khasi alphabets and literature". On his 173rd death anniversary, we take a moment to remember his great contributions to our state that paved a way for the future generations to grow and prosper. Every year April 18 is marked as World Heritage Day or the International Day for Monuments and Sites. Heritage is an integral part of our history and tradition and the day emphasizes on raising awareness about the same - the need to preserve it for future generations.

Ancient monuments and sites are an asset for any nation and need to be preserved and protected for the next generations to take pride in their wealthy culture and heritage. The day is devoted to not only make people aware of their heritage and monuments but also acknowledge the tremendous effort and work done by organizations and communities like The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in this respect. There is a need for global awareness and inclusion of communities’ participation to realize the goal on a larger scale.

This year’s theme β€œComplex Pasts: Diverse Futures” reflects on the need to acknowledge global calls for greater inclusion and recognition of diversity. This day invites all of us to reflect on, interpret and review existing narratives.

Known as "sakura" in Japanese, these vivid pink blooms are a symbol of spring because it is a time of renewal. However, because the blooms are short-lived, they are also symbolic of the fleeting nature of life. Cherry trees have spread throughout the world to other Asian countries, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Turkey, Spain British, Australia, and beyond. We’re very lucky to have thousands of cherry trees around our state which just adds more to the endless beauty.
Come with us as we take you on a mystical experience around the city of Cherry Blossoms and relive the heritage amongst it.

Tirot Sing, also known as U Tirot Sing Syiem born in the year 1802 and died in the year 1835, was one of the chiefs of the Khasi people in the early 19th century. He drew his lineage from the Syiemlieh clan. He was Syiem (chief) of Nongkhlaw, part of the Khasi Hills. His surname was Syiemlieh. He was a constitutional head sharing corporate authority with his Council, general representatives of the leading clans within his territory. Tirot Sing declared war and fought against British for attempts to take over control of the Khasi Hills. On his 186th Death anniversary, we pay our respects to the first Khasi Martyr.
Come and join us on our Heritage Walk as we go down history and talk about his heroic actions that paid the price for our freedom.

Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, MVC (7 March 1975 – 1 July 1999) was an Indian Army officer of 12 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, who was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second highest gallantry award, for exemplary valor in combat during operations in the Kargil War in 1999. He is the only person from the state of Meghalaya to have won this distinct and prestigious honor. A bust of Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum has been inaugurated at Rhino Museum Shillong in his memory. We salute this brave son of the land and his supreme sacrifice for the nation. Come and pay homage with us on our Heritage walks as we talk more about our immortal heroes.
