Double Decker Living Root Bridge..
at Nongriat Village,Sohra(Cherrapunjee)
A living Art which is an established art by Artists, Who are the Artists here ?
Nature and Human Hands. Currently at its 400 yrs running. These root bridges are made from Rubber Tree Roots, Iron rods, Bamboo Planks and nails. The path which leads to this magnificent beauty. It is two bridges stacked one over the other and one of its kind in the entire world. It’s truly a wonder in itself. I was told it can take up to 50 people at once. This natural bridge is said to be over 200 years old and, like the rest, just gets stronger over time – unlike man made bridges.
One has to take 3,600 cement steps, Two huge hanging iron bridges inside the village called Nongriat, The bridges were made of rusty iron cables repaired and supported with bamboo with some parts held together with steel wires. The whole bridge shakes and swings and the water flowing 20-25 feet below makes the whole experience fantabulous. One could hear the sounds of the squeaking cables, the water flowing below.
Earlier 2010, the path was extremely difficult hence only few people could manage to go down to see this beauty. It is still an unmatched and untouched beauty because of the hard trek all the way down and up does take a toll on the body. You will get homestay options with very basic dormitory rooms and fixed limited set of food available, Nothing Fancy.
The Village is filled with lush beauty of nature around. The life isn't easy at all, Women are on frontline and work for their living as Khasi Tribe of Meghalaya still follows Matrilineal descent, wherein after the marriage Man leaves his house and stays with his Wife's family, takes care of kid and do household chores etc. The children takes mother's surname.
I urge you to visit Meghalaya once in your lifetime to see this spectacular visionary form of art.
