Meghalaya is known for its living root bridges made entirely from the elastic roots of the ficus elastica or rubber fig tree. Intricately woven, these eco-friendly bridges are suspended over rivers or deep grooves, with some bridges even existing in double levels as seen in this picture. ๐Ÿ‘†
The living root bridges have been carefully constructed by the imagination and architectural skills of the indigenous elders of the Khasi and Jaintia tribe centuries before our generation, to create the beautiful site we see today. A very exclusive entity, these unique structures stand strong in over 70 villages in Meghalaya and have been included in the tentative list of the UNESCO world heritage sites. ๐Ÿ“Œ
