Riding through the Zanskar Valley just as day breaks is nothing short of magical - though to do it on the onset of winter certainly requires adequate preparation! 🥶

We set out at the crack of dawn from Padum to beat the roadwork restrictions on the day, allowing us to experience a stunning ride alongside the Zanskar River just as the sun began to come up ☀️

No matter how many times you’re lucky enough to ride this route, it never ceases to amaze! 🤩

A new road to Padum now crosses over and runs to the left of the Kargiak and Tsarap Rivers before rejoining the old road further ahead - bypassing Purne village and the iconic fech fech climb that lay just ahead of it! 🏍️

Despite that, the ever ongoing roadworks ensure you’re always in for a surprise and plenty of dust when heading this way - Zanskar makes for anything but easy passage even in the present day! 😮‍💨

Plenty of smiling faces and stunning weather to boot as the Roof of the World Expedition made its way up and away from Himachal Pradesh into Zanskar via Shingo La 🏔️☀️

The journey up to the gateway to Zanskar Valley never disappoints, and even after smooth tarmac has been laid all the way to the top it makes for a beautiful run 🏍️💨

One final surprise for the group before the end of the ride as Baralacha La - always known for throwing in one last twist before the ride ends - was covered in snow ❄️

Mercifully, the road was still relatively clear which meant everyone could have a little fun and get some great photos in before heading down the other side and back to civilisation after 2 weeks in the mountains 🏔️

A fitting final chapter to what was nothing short of an absolutely epic ride ‼️

The return from Karzok to civilisation is one that usually leaves a mixed taste in the mouth - the ride is stunning for the most part, but re-learning how to negotiate heavy traffic after over a week of having the road pretty much to yourself is always tricky! 🏍️

The rain gods decided to bless the group’s return to Himachal, with the weather turning pretty much as soon as we hit the Leh-Manali Highway 🛣️

The wildlife we encountered en route more than made up for it though, on another stunning day of riding in the mightiest of mountains 🐐

The start of our return leg on the - Rediscover Ladakh Ride as we set out from Hanle towards Korzok and of course the stunning Tso Moriri 🏔️

Though the weather was overcast, the route we took ensured that plenty of off-roading compensated for not being able to see the Great Lake at its finest! 🏍️

One last night at real high altitude before we began the run to civilisation again 🌌

On top of the world! 🌎✈️

The - Rediscover Ladakh group summits Umling La (19,204 feet above sea level) - a bucket list item for bikers everywhere today! 🏍️

Despite being a tarmac run to the top, the altitude is dizzying - you can feel an immediate difference compared to some of Ladakh’s other high passes 🫣

Definitely something to tell the folks about back home! 😎

A landmark day on the - Rediscover Ladakh Ride, as the group began the climb from Hanle up to Umling La - the world’s highest motorable pass standing tall at 19,024 feet 🏔️

We chose to take the adventurous off-road route via Norbu La on the way up, as it was definitely wiser to tackle the fech-fech and other tricky bits while everyone was still fresh and the light was good! 🏍️

The ride up from this side is surreal at points - wide open dirt and any number of trails available, all ultimately joining at the same point before beginning the ascent to the Pass! Some experience, this 😎

Routing via Changthang and the Rezang La War Memorial, the Rediscover Ladakh group was treated to some of the most fantastic views and untouched routes in these mighty mountains! 🏔️

A difficult day’s ride, along with an emotional stop at the War Memorial meant the group only reached Hanle - our destination for the next few nights - in the evening 🌌

An exceptional experience and one that will stay in the riders’ memory for years to come - of that we have no doubt 😎

A stunning morning as we set out from Leh towards Hanle to begin the second leg of the - Rediscover Ladakh Ride! 🏍️

A few quick pointers to begin the morning before we set out towards Ladakh’s newest biking hotspot, but in true Xplorearth fashion we ensured to take a route that most on the ride were yet to see! 🏔️

The calm before the storm, as the group was given two well deserved days off in between the epic Rediscover Ladakh ride to recuperate as well as enjoy everything Leh and had to offer 🏔️

A spiritual trip to Thiksey monastery was a must for many, as they made the short trip from the town to take in the marvels of this iconic spot! 🙏🏼

The second half of the ride was going to be taxing, so having some downtime in between to recuperate, tend to the motorcycles and really take in the sites and sounds of the region was essential to make sure everything was in top shape for the days to come! 🏍️

The routine run from Kargil to Leh is a stunning tarmac stretch that allows you to make great time and enter Ladakh’s sprawling capital well in time to crack open a few chilled beers and take in the sunset 🌅

Naturally then, we took the group all over the Ladakhi mountainside, fully in keeping with the spirit of Rediscovering Ladakh! 🏔️

As it is, the next two days would be spent at so the riders would have plenty of time to explore Leh on their own time - so what better way to go about the day with a bunch that was always up for an adventure! 🏍️

After visiting the Memorial at Dras and having a hearty lunch in the town, the ride for the day really began. Plenty of hairpins with deadly drops on either side, culminating at Umba La (14,750 feet), before beginning our return to Kargil for the night 🏍️

A stunning day of riding on routes most of the group had never even heard of, much less traversed before and truly in keeping with the concept of Rediscovering Ladakh with 🏔️

A special day on the - Rediscover Ladakh ride as the group made its way from Kargil to the famous War Memorial at Dras to pay tribute to all those who had risked their lives in the years of war in the region 🇮🇳

After an emotional hour or so at the Memorial, we made our way to the town of Dras for an early lunch, before heading off to do the majority of our riding for the day 🏍️

The fifth edition of the @indiatriumph Adventure Trails - Rajasthan took place in early January this year. The event has become an annual figure in the @xplorearth.shimla ride calendar and we always look forward to training riders on how to take on sand - a surface new to most who participate!!! Day 1 and 2 of the ride took the group from Mandawa to Bikaner and further onto Sam, with a mixture of tarmac, dirt and sand being tackled along the way! Though riders struggles initially, it was great to see them attacking the dunes with the same enthusiasm even after failed attempts, and eventually becoming far more confident riding the same!!! The World's highest Rally Raid.

Established in 1999. Making grown men cry ever since.

Started in 1999 as a salve to 3 motorsport junkies whose desire to wander aimlessly, albeit at ridiculously high speeds across the Himalayan landscape, led them to fire up an idea that gave birth to the now quite famous Rallye Raid de Himalaya - a cross country rally that runs 2000 kms across the Western Himalaya just as winter is tightening its death grip on the mountains.

This annual pilgrimage of masochists, armed to the teeth with outdated equipment and dubious 4x4’s will attempt to beat icy roads, frozen riverbeds and the highest mountain passes in the world in an attempt to win the ‘World’s Highest Rally’ !
