The story of Lat Sahib ka Girja of Kolkata is interesting. The city of Kolkata is full of monuments of immense historical significance. One of such buildings is located beside the famous Writers building in one of the bustling areas of the city. We are talking about St. Andrew's Church, the first and the only Scottish Church of Kolkata. It is also known as St. Andrew's Kirk. The foundation stone of this church was laid down by the the then Governor General of India, The Marquess of Hastings. The locals refer to the Governor General as " Lat Sahib" , so the Church was given the name " Lat Sahib ka Girja". The foundation stone was laid down on 30th November,1815. Though historians differ. It was told that the foundation stone was laid down by the Honourable Archibald Seton. During the early nineteenth century Kolkata was the most prominent city for the East India Company in India. We must note one important point that the settlement of the company was not only filled by the English men but people of Scotland constituted an important section of the European society here. The increasing pressure to create a church by the Presbyterian Scottish community in Kolkata ultimately compelled the British parliament to issue directives to East India company for the facilitation of religious work in Bengal and other important presidencies. As per the charter of 1813, the Anglo Indian Presbytery
Was formed. Dr Rev James Bryce reached Kolkata after a long voyage on 28th November,1814. He was supposed to be the first priest of the Andrew's Church. He was appointed as chaplain at the bengal ecclesiastical establishment. He was a man with a purpose. He devoted his energy to the church which was finally erected in the year 1818 and designed in the line of St Martin's in the field of London. The tall doric pillars and the beautiful square looked structure attract the tourists and also a testimony of the architectural grandeur of the church. St Andrew's Church is also associated with a battle between the first Bishop of Calcutta Mr Middleton and Mr Bryce. Rev Bryce wanted to built a high spire on the top of the building.
Bishop of Calcutta strongly objected because he belived that only the church of England could have done such construction . But ultimately Mr Bryce won the battle and got necessary permission to erect the High spire eventually he built up one which was even taller than the steeple of the neighbouring St John's Church. He instructed to put a c**k to crow over it. This is even prominently visible today. Inside the church one can find some stone tablets on Scottish people from different spehere of life which give us an idea about the strong Scottish presence of the then Kolkata.

21/06/2021

Portuguese Church of Kolkata is an important place to visit as it is an integral part of the history and heritage of the colonial Kolkata. Situated at one of the most busiest juncture (Brabourne Road - Badabazzar area) of the city it was the first Catholic place of worship in Kolkata. It is probably the most important symbol in the city displaying the Portuguese connections and the glorious past of the Portuguese culture in Kolkata. It is said by the researchers that the first Portuguese place of worship in Kolkata was actually a mud hut established at the end of 17th century which was later converted to a brick made Chapel. But when British East India company took control and made their grip tighten in the administration of Kolkata some problems surfaced and the relationship between the catholics Portuguese and the Anglican British administrative set up deteriorated. The British took over the Chapel. In 1796 however the Chapel was returned to the Portuguese again. They converted the Chapel into a church. In this context the name of Mr Joseph Barretto must be mentioned. He was a philanthropist and a wealthy trader in those days who financially contributed a lot into the construction of the church. The church came into existence in the year 1799. The construction was done following the design of Mr James Driver. The church was dedicated to Rosary virgin Marry and thus it is also known as Cathedral of Holy Rosary.

The architectural beauty of the church is noteworthy. The church is situated in a relatively small compound but inside the compound the atmosphere is serene and it is ideal for the peace of mind. The cathedral is beautifully painted in blue and white which looks attractive. The lovely arched entrance of the church catches attention. One of the most attractive features of the church is the twin towers which are visible from a very long distance. Those towers look like minarets with rounded domes at the top adorning the celling. Inside the church exist the beautiful altar and the beautiful statue of the virgin Marry. The exquisite round stained glass windows on either side of the fluted columns remain an attraction. Apart from the statue of virgin Marry there are some others statues of Biblical characters also present in the church. Inside the church exist wooden panels depicting the different stages of the crucifixion of christ. This is something which tourists should not miss. There are lot of memorial tablets present in the walls and pavings of the church. These all have immense historical values. The church is an active church with services being held here along with the Sunday congregation. This very old church is an important piece of history in the city of joy and a must visit for those who wish to explore the heritage of the city.
