I thought I saw one once in Gurgaon during the winters and here this one was at 3900 m. Stories of migration are most often limited to the Greylag and the Barheaded geese that fly over the Himalayan ranges to grace us with their presence. While size and a foreign passport never fail to enamour us there are several small birds that travel great distances too.
How they adapt to the change in altitude and environment including predators that are few at this height in contrast to the plains is a thought that has always filled me with wonder.
is an ideal place to be for those interested in birding. Far removed from the ‘madding crowd’ this quiet little village with a river below and a short drive to desolate meadows one of which has a huge watering hole is the perfect place to be.

It was a surreal and Unforgettable experience in this village! Surrounded by snow clapped mountains, house was located right on the edge of the cliff with Spiti river flowing deep down the gorge. With hardly 30 families and a monastery, this place was quite a peaceful and perfect place to relax and mark it as a base for onward journey.

The Mahila Mandal of our village came together yesterday to pray that our farms yield a good harvest this year and that the weather be kind.

The land is getting tilled to be made ready for the little pea seeds that these women will nurture for the next 4 months till harvest time...

What all can you do in a day in our sleepy little village of Spiti?

Things to do in Pangmo:
1. Visit the Pangmo nunnery: 15 minute walk through the village. Immerse yourself in the culture of Spiti for an unforgettable experience.

2. Stargazing: On moonless nights, you can see the Milky way clearly from our homestay. Great spot for some astrophotography.

3. Hike to the Ridge: You can walk up to the adjacent ridge that forms the edge of the Spiti river. From here you can see both sides of the valley. Be warned though it gets very windy here especially at night.

4. Explore the village: Take a leisurely walk to experience the beautiful architecture and people of Pangmo. Indulge in soul-satisfying conversations with the locals.

5. Lastly: Lay back, watch the clouds float over a meandering river and mighty mountains, read a book, paint, do nothing, just be. You are in Spiti. Don't forget to breathe. :)

The highway from Granphu to Kaza via Kunzum and Pangmo is now open. We have also seen a few bikers make their way into the valley using this road. The road is still very bumpy and unpaved at a lot of stretches, but one can be sure of breathtaking views and an endless adventure.
Now what is your excuse? Hope to sse you in valley soon!
