The shutter has fallen for the last time for the season, the Manali road is now closed, tourist numbers have dwindled, and winter has set in. The Saint bernards along with their people have left for a warmer climate. Finally we have time to look back over another busy season. Our heritage reconstruction project in Kwang has been an adventure unlike any other. More on that in future posts.

As we head towards our last couple of weeks of work, the mountains in Spiti will soon be seized by winter. Until spring sets in, an intense cold grips the region. Isolating the people as their life’s rhythm tunes itself with the needs of their livestock.
If your curious spirit tempts you, we’re open till the 10th of Nov.

It’s autumn in Spiti. When leaves fall with the bluster of a chill wind, but not before turning into shades of vibrant colour. Bright yellow, gold, orange and velvet reds. Like dancing fairies, they flutter with the shifting wind. Then, at once, they soar like fluorescent angels and sail into the dark cloudy skies.
Spiti's sacred energy released.

Those who dare to travel when and where other's do not are rewarded with fantastic memories. Enjoying popular tourist locals minus the crowds.
It worked for us in Sudan and Burkina Faso and it is certainly working for the 78 yr old Gujrati Radiologist who rode up on his Himalayan with his group of friends, similarly for Ravinder who cycled up from Hissar, ditto for the group of Mumbaikers who meandered up and are spending three days with us at Deyzor.
We've also seen an adventurous European family cycling Spiti with their 3 children, the youngest not more than ten years old.
If the media was unable to scare all of them off, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR???
Meanwhile our Heritage Reconstruction project in Kwang continues rolling on with new master artisans joining our team from Kinnaur. We are privileged to work along side and learn from them everyday as we strive to create Spiti's first premium heritage property. Watch this space for more on that...

Workshop in Spiti

We are offering a unique chance to join us on our own live worksite showcasing the vernacular architectural traditions of Spiti valley. This September we are hosting a Rajasthani Lime Water Tank Workshop in Kwang Village Spiti Valley. Master Artisans will be joining us from Rajasthan to teach their time honoured tradition of pure, natural water storage.
Throughout the workshop you will learn how to construct a water tank from beginning to end. Including foundations, preparing your base for the floor, brick masonry with lime mortar, Thappi base plaster, Lohi and Araish finish plasters and natural herbal admixtures. All amidst the backdrop of our ongoing heritage reconstruction project. Showcasing the talent and wisdom of the traditional architecture of the region.
Limited spaces available so sign up without delay.

Firoz Phiroze Palkhivala - Pedalpoweredtravel
recently graced us at Deyzor with his inspiring presence, reminding us why we love to travel on two pedal powered wheels. To go slow, to make friends with strangers, to live a life beyond mere consumption.
A lawyer by profession, yet a cycle tourer at heart. He has been pedaling his way across India for the past two years. In direct opposition to today’s tech-obsessed world, for Fiiroz, travel is so much more than just getting that perfect social media shot. He believes travel should be meaningful. It should inspire you, rejuvenate and ground you.

Refreshing to meet someone who travels for himself, not to create 'content' and gain likes from strangers on his Youtube channel.

Firoz left his life in Bombay in an attempt to understand different cultures and to learn about life. His travel has left him with some great stories. Spending time with him has made us less cynical about tourism in general.

Spiti these days for all its wonders and surprises gets reduced to the "highest everything" tagline along with a visit to a bridge, a post office and just three villages. If more people learned to slow down on their travels like Feroz, Spiti's hidden treasures might just reveal themselves..

Burkina Faso has welcomed us with open arms for the remaining 5 weeks of our journey to know the world.
Artificial borders imposed during colonial conquest have separated the Gurusi people across international boundaries. United culturally, speaking various indigenous languages yet on one side English made our encounters easy French as the lingua franca on the other is proving a challenge.
The mural art of the region was a stunning introduction to the cultural heritage. Whilst a visit to the slave camp in the border town in Ghana a solemn reminder of a tragic past not forgotten in the present. We witnessed the plates hand carved in stone where men and women were fed the bare minimum to enable their long march to a life of enslavement.
Thoroughly unexpected we encountered a young Chinese couple traversing the continent from Morocco to South Africa on a 150cc scooter, their next stop Ivory Coast. A reminder that anything is possible...

Throughout the summers we share epic tales from our travels with our guests. Our winters are spent experiencing new lands, creating new memories to share on our return. Here is a taste of our adventures in West Africa so far.

Fear of our unknown neighbours seems to be a shared phenomenon across the globe, except that is here in Ghana.
Here the Fulani from Mali & Niger, the Hausa from Nigeria, the Burkinabe from Burkina Faso have all at one time or another migrated to this land in search of a better life & food for their livestock. Some as recently as in the last 40 years (post Ghana's independence). The Ghanian's have welcomed them in and not made religion and ethnicity an issue. An inspiring African story that is seldom told.
The last few days have seen us cycling &
(& pushing) our cycles through the sandy trails from village to village along the border with Ivory Coast in search of an offbeat Hippo Sanctuary as we make our way towards Burkina Faso. Perhaps as interesting though was seeing the rhythm and deft with which a group of colourfully dressed women pounded the yam for Banku, a national dish.

Our travels are not always glamorous - we choose to go where few others do, meaning services often range from basic to non existent. A vegetarian meal a mere dream. But we learn about the world and ourselves which is what inevitably inspires us to keep on pedalling...

Before we head down from Spiti we need to find a home for these pups. 5 in all.
They have been living with us for over a month and while they are healthy, we'll be away for a few months and we've struggled to find a home for them here.

A few weeks ago we welcomed Guzel to Deyzor. Unfortunately this beautiful Mastiff was found abandoned in Uttarakhand. Erum from brought her to us and she immediately found a friend in Azizzam.
As we get closer to end the season we were surprised to find one last cycle tourer from Malaysia.

Manali-Kaza road is still open.

Rajasthani artisans have been creating 100% natural lime water tanks and wells for centuries. Lime has purifying properties, and excellent thermal capacity keeping water sources fresh and cool. It also ages gracefully meaning that the structures built with this material can last for generations. Sadly this incredible technique has been forgotten in exchange for cheap plastic replacements that offer a poor alternative in every sense. For the first time we are hosting a seven day workshop during which you can learn directly from Master Artisan Rafiq Muwal how to create one for yourself. To be hosted at Bear Cottage nestled in the middle of the forest above Mcleod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh. October 5 - 11th.

Book a tour with us this Sept and we will make you see a side of Spiti and Kinnaur which rarely gets visited. Away from the worlds ‘highest’ nonsense, our tour will make you understand why we made the valley our home.

We have been fortunate to experience the world and its people on our cycle. At a pace we enjoy. Our tour will give you insights into Spitian culture much in the same way we experience different countries.

We realized in Bolivia why the Jaguar is called ‘whispering death’. An Andean nation with cholitas, llamas and stunning glacial mountains. With some 30 plus different languages, some Bolivian’s bury llama fetuses under houses and you may come across Bolivians pouring alcohol over cars as a blessing. While a predominately catholic country, it’s soul is indigenous.

Our travel to Ethiopia made us have the best coffee in the world and there we learnt how to use a 13 month calendar. Learnt a new time format, and a script borrowed from none. Plenty of offers to buy a Kalashnikov for 2 dollars. A visit to the amazing Omo valley with its tribal communities and diversity of life gave a new meaning to the term - melting pot of humanity.

Travel to Iran to meet the friendliest, most hospitable and cultured people in the world. To see for yourself how the world media machine is completely wrong. Iranians are ready to give you the best of what they have. A centuries-old tradition in Iranian hospitality.
Hundreds of empires including some of the ancient world's most powerful ones have ruled in Persia and left their mark in the art, architecture, and culture of the country.

In Cuba we experienced absence of consumerism (also in Spiti). There is music everywhere. A beautiful blend of Afro Caribbean and Spanish cultures. Visit Cuba before corporations from the United States expand to the island, putting an end to its singularity as a place untainted by McDonalds and Starbucks. A place frozen in time, one of the last remnants of real socialism in the world.
