That evening was a little special, I mean l've seen hundreds of sunsets in Spiti but this sunset was a bit different.
We saw the whole sky illuminate in orange light, the mountains were glowing in the last light of the day, and there was a cold breeze kissing our skin, the kind of breeze that talks about the oncoming snow.
And well, it did snow the next morning, so this in a way ended up turning into the only sunset we saw during that spiti winter trip.
Making it all the more special!

How beautiful it is to wake up to snow, and little did we know that when we went to sleep the night before, we would be waking up to everything being all white.
So when we opened our windows in the morning, the quiet of the snowy morning just felt like a beautiful sight, a sight that we didn't want to move away from. So we just sat there, with our tea/coffee, staring at the view in front of us.

The mountain dreams are beautiful aren't they?
But what if you watch those dreams unfold in front of your eyes, because I did on that golden evening in Pin valley, as we moved further into the depths of this part of Spiti.
The Pin river was silently flowing through the valley, while the mountains up ahead were glowing in sunset light, making everything look so incredibly surreal.
Something you'd have craved for everytime you'd have thought about mountains, that was the magic of this evening!

A morning winter drive to Pin valley is always filled with unparalleled beauty, and it wasn't any different on this morning. We took the 4x4s on those beautiful snowclad roads, with everything covered in untouched white, looking like a dream and all we wanted to do was to continue driving until the road continued.
However, as happens with snowy days, Pin valley was mostly cut off, so we just parked our cars and enjoyed views around the road, plus with no one around, it felt as if we had the whole place to ourselves.

On our way to Chicham, we usually keep our eyes open and our telephoto lens ready for any kind of sighting. And on that snowy day, it was the same for us, we were looking for snow leopards to spring out of nowhere, to be captured in our frames. But we ended up capturing a different kind of wildlife, Ibex and Blue Sheep, meandering through those steep slopes.

As the car took another turn, it was right there, sitting on top of a hill above the village. People stared at it with eyes wide open, wondering if it was the same place that they had seen in pictures for years, if it was the same Ki monastery whose lure had brought so many people to Spiti.

It was clearly a sight worth remembering forever, to watch the monastery standing tall midst snowclad mountains, and looking like a true sanctuary of wisdom.

During our 4x4 snow expedition, we woke up to overcast skies, and somehow we just knew that it was going to snow that morning. But after waiting for an hour, when it didn’t snow, we started looking at the sky, trying to determine where the clouds were denser and in which direction it might snow. And immediately we knew that it’d be snowing in Pin valley region.

We told everyone that the previous plan had changed, and we were immediately leaving towards Pin valley.

And there it was, snowfall, our intuition wasn’t wrong, but the best part was that it was the first snowfall for most of the group, and seeing that happiness on their faces was worth cancelling any plan for this moment in snowfall!

Spiti In Winters (Part 1/3) . . . Well the thought of it must have got you excited, one can simply Google these 3 words and could easily be stunned by these magical landscape and pictures that Google has to show. But is all that pretty as it seems? Here are 3 important tips if you’re considering travelling to Spiti in Winter: 1) Spiti Valley is accessible but not all the villages of Spiti. A simple formula to understand this is “Higher the snow, lesser the places and vice versa.” While the main villages of Spiti which include Tabo, Kaza, Kibber, Ki are accessible almost all the time, interior villages like Mudh, Komic, Hikkim might not be accessible depending upon the amount of snow. Also avoid staying in the interiors as overnight snowfall can lead to road closures and you could be stuck for the rest of journey. 2) White Spiti, technically the thick blanket of snow covered landscapes is between Jan mid to March end. - So if your objective is to see the entire valley covered in pristine white snow, plan your trip accordingly in between. The chances of snowfall are also maximum in the months of Jan/Feb so if the objective is to find snowfall, these months work out the best in terms of maximising the chances. But please note to not mix your objectives the thumb rule is “Higher the snow, lesser the villages” 3. Be prepared for modest but one of the most comfortable properties, Homestays - Due to freezing temperatures simple resources like fire, water and food are challenged. And hence the arrangements as a host, however, accepting the challenges just like any rural parts of India. But be prepared for tons of memories with the local family, the sheer willingness to make you comfortable, the effort of well arranged and clean the homes are might put our efforts and city hotels to shame.
