Q: What is 40 days cold in Kashmir called?
Ans: Chillai Kalan
This is the time of "Chillai Kalan," also called "The Great Winter," a Kashmiri phrase that defines the harshest 40 days of cold.

What is Chillai Kalan?

1. The most severe part of the winter in Kashmir consists of three months. It is divided into three parts called the Chilas:- The Chillai Kalan, the Chillai Khurd, and the Challai Bache.

2. Chillai-Kalan, is the 40-day period of harsh winter. Chillai-Kalan begins from December 21 and ends on January 31 next year.

3. Chillai-Kalan is followed by a 20-day long Chillai-Khurd (small cold) that occurs between January 31 and February 19 and a 10-day long Chillai-Bachha (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 2.

Cultivated in the picturesque region of Kashmir, amidst the snow-capped Himalayas, this coveted spice has a rich history and a unique flavor profile that sets it apart from saffron produced elsewhere.

Beyond its culinary uses, Kashmiri saffron is revered for its medicinal properties. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mood-enhancing properties, making it a prized ingredient in traditional medicine and wellness.
In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the authenticity and integrity of Kashmiri saffron amidst challenges such as climate change and counterfeit products.

The seeds of saffron flowers are planted in rocky, dry soil in August, and they began to
sprout in October and November. Saffron is cultivated and harvested in the Karewa (highlands), Pulwama, Budgam, Kishtwar and Srinagar regions of Jammu and Kashmir and has been assigned Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Further, Pampore located in Pulwama district is often referred to as the "Saffron Town" is a significant producer of high-quality saffron. Pampore is about 15 kms from Srinagar and visitors can witness the fascinating process of saffron harvesting. During the flowering season, local farmers delicately handpick the saffron threads, known as "red gold," from the blossoms.

Char Chinar is an island in the mesmerizing Dal Lake of Srinagar. It is one of the famous Srinagar tourist places.

The Island named Char Chinar is surrounded by majestic Chinar trees at the four corners, thus known as Char-Chinari (Four Chinars). It was built by Murad Baksh, Aurangzeb's brother.

The finest way to experience the Char Chinar is from a shikara on Dal Lake. Three islands can be found in the Dal Lake, and two of them are encircled by chinar trees. One island, known as Roph Lank or Silver Island, is situated on the Bod Dal in addition to the Char Chinar. Sone Lank, or Gold Island, is the name of the other island, which is situated on the Lokut Dal & it overlooks the holy shrine of Hazratbal.

A Shikara ride on the pristine Dal Lake cannot be completed before making a stop at this scenic island.

Kaandur-Tchot is a typical, medium-sized bread that Kashmiris eat daily, usually with butter or jam for breakfast. Every Kashmiri colony has one traditional bakery known as Kaandur-vaan. In Kashmir, there is a bread for every season & various occasions like engagements, weddings, and births. Before sunrise, Kandurs all over the Valley start baking these breads in wood-fired tandoors, which pair perfectly with salty pink tea called Nun Chai.

Avalanche strikes J&K's Sonamarg.
An avalanche struck the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Monday.

No casualties or financial losses were reported since the avalanche struck the Sonamarg area on the forest side, thus resulting in no damage, said officials.

Sonamarg 28 April: Saddened & shocked by loss of lives in a road accident in Sonamarg today.😭

Today on 28-04-2024 at around 4:00 pm a vehicle boarded with 9 passengers while coming from Sonamarg towards Kangan skidded off the road at Gagangeer and plunged into Sindh River.
During the rescue process 02 injured persons were shifted to nearby Hospital for immediate treatment and four (04) dead bodies were also retrieved from the spot.

Kashmir Weather: High alert issued in Kashmir Valley due to continuous rains.
Due to incessant rains, many roads in the Kashmir Valley including Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Mughal Road, Srinagar Leh Road and roads leading to remote areas of Kupwara, Gurez have had to be closed.

However, several areas including Zojila, Sadhna Top, Razdan Pass, Dawar Gurez, Tulail Gurez, Machil, Kangdori, main Gulmarg, Sinthan Top and Mughal Road experienced fresh snowfall, bringing down the mercury across the Valley.

Meteorological Department has predicted more snowfall and rain till April 30.

Tulip Garden Is Closed For Visitors From 24th April 2024.

The declining blossoms, officials said, have prompted the decision to shut Asia’s largest tulip garden, which is located on the foothills of Zabarwan.

The decision was made as the Tulip Bloom, which lasts from the end of March to the end of April, is practically coming to an end.

An estimated 4.25 lakh tourists visited the Tulip Garden this year, setting a record for the number of visitors.

Eight years in the making, Kashmir's magic carpet is a rare beauty.

The intricate marvel, 72 ft. in length and 40 ft. in width, weighing 1,685 kg, and featuring over three crore knots, has taken eight years to weave and is likely to embellish a palace in the Middle East.

At least 30 people are required to unroll the carpet. It would take 30-35 professional washers to deal with the carpet on a daily basis.
