THE GATEWAY TO HEAVEN
(Satopanth Tal With Swarga rohini trek)
The Glacial Lake which is around 25kms from Badrinath, could be reached after a arduous trek crossing Lakshmiban and Chakratirtha. Natural Caves along the path are used as the night shelter. Around Badrinath places like Lakshmiban and Chakratirtha are steeped in legends. It is said that goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth)and her husband Narayan meditated in Lakshmiban and Chakratirtha respectively and while meditating, Narayan kept his famous Sudarshan Chraka on the valley which got depressed by the weight of that Chakra to form a beautiful round shaped meadow surrounded by lofty mountains. Traversing the satopanth glacier and hours of hard trekking on the treacherous moraine is required to reach the lake. The first thing that strikes you is the strange ethereal ambience of the lake, Calm and Soothing The perfectly triangle shaped lake is at the base of the snow crested Chaukhamba 1 peak. Satopanth tal trek is just for hardcore trekkers indeed!
Legends:
1. It goes that the pandavas followed this path to reach the gates of heaven after the Mahabharata war. This area is shrouded in mystery. While trekking you’ll cross some of the highest snow covered peaks, breathtaking waterfalls (some of which don’t even make it to the ground because of the winds) and magnificent glaciers; you’ll trace the source of the Alaknanda River and knock on the gates of heaven at the Satopanth Taal.
2. It goes that on Ekadashi, Lord Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Mahesh (the destroyer) visit the lake for a holy dip. Each of the 3 corners of the triangular lake is occupied by one of them.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Fitness level needed: above average (regular exercise, sports)
Trekking distance: Approximately 25Kms to the Satopanth taal and 25Kms back
Best time: From mid May till end of September
Why should you do this trek?

SPITI - "A world within a world"
Separated from fertile Lahaul by the soaring 4551m Kunzum La, Spiti is another chunk of Tibet marooned in India. The scattered villages in this serrated moonscape arrive like mirages, clusters of whitewashed mud-brick homes huddled amid green barley fields below monasteries perched on crags a thousand feet above. The turquoise-grey ribbon of the Spiti River is your near-constant companion, running along a fairly broad valley before turning south at Sumdo into the precipitous gorges of the Hangrang Valley.
In many ways Spiti is even more rugged and remote than Ladakh, but buses do run over the Kunzum La from Manali from mid-June to mid-October, and the road from Kinnaur is open all year (except for temporary closures for winter snowfall and monsoon landslides and floods). The Spiti–Kinnaur loop is one of Asia's great road trips, and a steady stream of motorcyclists, mountain bikers and drivers of all kinds of four-wheelers pit themselves against some of the most challenging roads in India.
In either direction, an inner line permit is required for the stretch between Sumdo, east of Tabo, and the Akpa checkpoint east of Rekong Peo.
Auli is pretty as a postcard during the summer months. But the rolling hills and perfect gradients also make it THE skiing destination of India. In fact, some Westerners say skiing here is on par with some of the best in Europe.
Snow forecast: December to February
Winter temperatures: Average minimum temperature during winter is about 4 degrees. But it regularly drops to below 0 degrees centigrade.
What to pack: Your heaviest woolens, a warm, winter jacket, gloves, beanies, shawls, footwear that can weather the snow, dark glasses for the snow, a camera and extra batteries.
Jabro Dance - Jabro is a community dance of the nomadic people of Tibetan origin living in the high hills of the Changtheng area of Ladakh. Performed by men & women at all festive occassions, this dance is an integral part of the Losar celebrations, which is the Tibetan New Year Fesrival. The melodious Jabro songs are sung to the muscial accompaniment of 'Damian' - a guitar like stringed instrument and the flute.
