The Dark Side of Social Media Influencers: A Concern for Kashmir's Youth
In recent times, the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir have witnessed a surge in the creation and dissemination of reels and videos on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. While the advent of social media has undoubtedly brought people closer and created new avenues for self-expression, a disturbing trend has emerged, raising concerns about its impact on the impressionable minds of our younger generation.
A significant number of social media influencers in Kashmir are producing content that can only be described as nonsensical, devoid of substance, and often lacking in moral and ethical values. These influencers, driven by the pursuit of likes and followers, are inadvertently becoming role models for the youth, influencing their thoughts, behaviors, and lifestyle choices.
The consequences of this trend are far-reaching and alarming. The younger generation, seeking validation in the virtual world, often emulates the actions and attitudes of these influencers without critically evaluating the potential impact on their lives. The content, sometimes bordering on the inappropriate and irresponsible, can lead to a distortion of values and a misguided sense of priorities among our youth.
Parents and law enforcement agencies must play a crucial role in addressing this growing concern. Counselling sessions, both at home and in schools, should focus on fostering a sense of discernment among children, enabling them to differentiate between positive and negative influences on social media. Moreover, it is imperative for parents to actively engage with their children, understanding their online activities and guiding them towards responsible internet usage.
Law enforcement agencies can also contribute to curbing the negative effects of social media influencers by monitoring content that violates ethical standards or promotes harmful behaviors. Collaborative efforts between parents, schools, civil society organizations and the police can create a supportive environment for the youth, helping them navigate the challenges posed by the digital age.
It is essential for society to recognize that the impact of social media influencers extends beyond the virtual realm into the real lives of our children. By fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability among influencers, parents, and the community at large, we can strive to mitigate the adverse effects of mindless content on the well-being of Kashmir's younger generation. Only through collective efforts can we ensure that social media becomes a tool for positive influence and empowerment rather than a source of detriment to our youth.
