The magnificent ruins, testimony to the grandeur of the past, of this Sun Temple lie atop a plateau near the Anantnag city of South Kashmir. Dating back to the 8th Century CE, the temple was built by Laliaditya Muktapida, in honour of the sun god Surya, also known by the Sanskrit synonym, Martand. Architecture of the temple is a symphony of Chinese, Gupta, and Gandharan form of building styles. A central shrine in the courtyard of this temple is surrounded by as many as 84 smaller shrines.
