Israeli forces shot and killed Jana Zakaran, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl, during a raid in the city of Jenin on Monday, the Palestinian health ministry said.

An Israeli military statement said soldiers hit the girl ‘unintentionally’ as they returned fire at armed gunmen on a rooftop.

The WAFA news agency reported that Jana had been on the roof of her house and was found dead after Israeli troops withdrew from Jenin. The agency added that troops had entered the city and arrested three Palestinians.

The girl’s death has triggered calls from Palestinian officials for an international investigation into her killing by Israeli forces.

During one of the most violent years in more than a decade, Palestinian authorities say at least 165 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in 2022, with 36 of the victims being children, according to UNICEF.
