Kothaligad Trek | कोथळीगड / पेठ ट्रेक | Fireflies Festival | काजवा महोत्सव, निसर्गाचा अद्भुत चमत्कार

Kothaligad is a small funnel fort near Karjat. It is also called “Peth Fort” because of its vicinity to Peth village. Kothaligad is a famous premonsoon trek as you may see lots of fireflies here during this period.

The firefly season in Maharashtra typically occurs during the pre-monsoon months of May and June. This is when the fireflies come out in large numbers and create a magical spectacle by making the lights within their bodies. This process is called bioluminescence.
The glowing Fireflies are Males which attracts female fireflies. The female fireflies sends vibrations to attract the male for mating. The male fireflies survives 2 to 3 matings only after that the female fireflies eats up the male firefly. All the nearby fireflies blooms in the same pattern, you must experience this magnificent spectacle.

The height of the fort is approximately 3100ft and it falls in medium grade category. The route is mostly surrounded by trees with the rocky patches in between. You can enjoy the paranomic view from few spots during the trek.

This fort is associated with very bloody history. This fort was not strong but was considered as a guard post. Maratha warriors had arsenal at this fort which was used keep the weapons and military equipment. It is believed that Shivaji Maharaj had visited this fort. During the regime of Sambhaji Maharaj, it gained special importance. Keeping the importance of the fort in mind, the mughals captured this fort by betrayal in November 1684. Marathas lost this important fort with lot of bloodshed.
Later in 1817 during the regime of Bajirao Peshwa II, a brave chief named Bapurao rescued this fort from the British.

The fort has funnel like structure carved from inside, forming a circular staircase that reaches the top. The fort also has the cannons, temples, caves and some water tanks inside so lets explore the same. Once you reach the top you can see the beautiful views of the Sahyadri mountain range.

Welcome to Yatharth’s Magic – Bankot Fort & Harihareshwar Temple | बाणकोट किल्ला (हिम्मतगड) आणि हरिहरेश्वर मंदिर (दक्षिण काशी) 👌🏻

Bankot Fort is also called as Himmatgad Fort or Fort Victoria. This Bankot fort is very near to Velas Beach and is approx. 200Km from Mumbai. This fort is now maintained by Archaeological survey of India.

Bankot Fort stands at the mouth of Bankot creek which was a major sea trade route, wherein River Savitri meets the Arabian Sea.

First reference for this fort is found in Greek traveller Pliny’s works in first century AD, where he refers to this fort as Mandargiri or Mandgor. No reference is available till 1548. In 1548, Portuguese won this fort from Adilshah. Later Kanhoji Angre captured this fort and renamed it as Himmatgad. Due to enmity between Peshwas and Tulaji Angre, Peshwas allied with British and waged a war with Angres. Commander James captured the fort and named it as Fort Victoria. Since it was not economically viable to maintain this fort, it was handed over to the Peshwas.

After exploring the Bankot fort our next destination was the Hariharshwar Temple. Harihareshwar is also known as Dakshin Kashi. To reach Harihareshwar from Velas we need to cross the river Savitri via ferry.

At Harihareshwar there is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Although the exact date of construction of the temple is not known, it is known that the temple was restored by the first Bajirao Peshwa. Harihareshwar is considered an important pilgrimage site in India. Harihareshwar village is situated in the lap of four hills Brahmagiri, Vishnugiri, Sivagiri, Parvati.

It is understood that when Agastya Muni was traveling in search of peace, he first witnessed the four swayambhu lingas at Harihareshwar. The main Linga consists of Bramha, Vishnu, Mahesh & Parvati in the same linga.

After visiting these two temples, we can carry out the Pradikshina through the mountains and on the rocks near the sea.

Welcome to Yatharth’s Magic – Turtle Festival, Velas | कासव महोत्सव, वेळास | चला जाऊया कासवांच्या गावाला ! Conservation | Research 👌🏻

Today we are going to explore the unique Turtle festival in Velas. Velas is a small village on the western coast of Maharashtra and is approx. 200Km from Mumbai. This small village is blessed with the rich and diverse ecosystem.
This village has come to limelight in recent years for its unique Turtle Festival organized by the villagers and the forest department. Conservation & the research program is carried out on the most found Sea turtles called Olive Ridley in Pacific and Indian ocean.

In this video we will understand the complete process of hatching and why it is necessary to conserve these tiny creatures.

The research is been conducted on the female turtles by tagging and attaching the transmitters on their back, so that further studies can be conducted by tracking the movements of these Turtles.

We really appreciate the hard work put in by the villagers, forest team and other authorities to conserve these Turtles.
