Munroe Island : Island in Ashtamudi lake

Munroe Island is a hidden pearl in the backwaters which is composed of a cluster of 8 islands. Each of them is separated by small water channels and lakes. Munroe Island is located about 27 km from Kollam. The place is named in honour of Resident Colonel John Munroe, of the former princely state of Travancore. He is said to have integrated several backwater regions by digging canals. Some of this island’s main attractions are the narrow waterways, canal cruise and the famous Kallada Boat Race held here during the 10-day festival of Onam. It offers a unique and tranquil setting, far away from the constant chaos of modern life.

IRAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK
Rajamalai or known as Iravikulam National Park is located in Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district which is just around 13 kms far from the center of Munnar. As per the historical records it was once a hunting preserve for the British planters. However, it is not the same now as it carefully protects almost 29 species of wildlife including 100 varieties of butterflies, 20 species of amphibians, 140 species of birds out of which 10 are purely the pride unique species of Western Ghats. Situated 7000 ft. above sea level it was declared as a sanctuary in 1975 in order to preserve the highly endangered mountain goat, the Nilgiri Tahr. Apart from this, it is also the birth place of ‘‘Neelakurunji’’, a flower which only blossoms once in every 12 years. That’s not it, this is also a place sorted out as UNESCO World Heritage Site. September to October and then April to May are the best times to visit if you are looking to see the fully blooming grasslands and to spot the Nilgiri Tahr. Anamudi is the highest peak south of the Himalayas which you must not forget to see once you reach there. This 92 km stretched area could be easily accessed via road ways as there are buses and taxis are available.

JADAYUPARA
World’s largest Bird Sculpture Jadayu Earth’s Centre is one of the major tourist attractions in God’s Own Country, Kerala. Known in different names as Jadayu Earth Centre, Jadayu Nature Park and Jadayu Rock, it is located in Chadayamangalam in Kollam district. This massive concrete structure of Jadayu was the idea as well as built by film director Rajiv Anchal, it is actually a mythological character from the religious book of Hindus. This spot is believed to be where Jadayu took his last breath after fighting heroically with demon Ravana for saving Seetha (wife of Lord Rama). Ravan chopped off one wing of Jadayu hence it fell to this rock wounded severely and not just this, there is also a pond near to the rock which is believed to have formed by the stroke of Jadayu’s beak. Covering an area of over 15000 square feet, it’s physical attributes are, 70 feet tall, 150 feet broad and 200 feet long and it stands at a towering height of 1200 feet from sea level. Being the largest functional Bird statue, it got entered in the Guinness Book of Records. Apart from this statue, there are other reasons why tourists flock here including 15,000 square feet of utility space inside its functional sculpture. Inside the wing of the Jadayu sculpture, a multi-dimension mini-theatre is functional. On the hill top, a rain water reservoir has been built, with a storage capacity of 1.5 million litres of water. A distinctive feature of Jadayupara is the integrated paint ball station, which is spread out across a lush green natural terrain. The whole site can be covered by foot, cable car and heli-taxis for a full Bird’s eye view. Another main feature is that this stands as the monument of women’s safety. This Public Private Partnership tourism is the first initiative of Kerala government under BOT model which is close to the capital city’s airport, that is, inside fifty kilometers, visitors could easily catch buses to reach here.

മനം മയക്കുന്ന ഗ്രാമഭംഗികൊണ്ടും ഇളംതെന്നലിന്റെ നിറസാന്നിധ്യം കൊണ്ടും എന്നും കണ്ണിനും മനസിനും കുളിരേകുന്ന ഓർമ്മകൾ സമ്മാനിക്കുന്ന ; ഒത്തിരി ഇഷ്ടത്തോടെ ഓർക്കാനും വീണ്ടും ആ സാന്നിധ്യം അനുഭവിച്ചു ആ ഗ്രാമഭംഗിയിൽ അലിഞ്ഞില്ലാതാകാനും ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന സന്ചാരികളുടെ ഇഷ്ട താവളങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് തൃശ്ശൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ ചാഴുർ ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിലെ പുള്ളു പാടശേഖരങ്ങൾ . ഏതൊരു സാദാരണകാരനെയും കവിയാക്കുന്ന കാവ്യതമാകത വിളിച്ചുണർത്തുന്ന , ബാല്യത്തിന്റെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയും കുസൃതി നിറഞ്ഞാടുന്ന കൗമാരത്തിന്റെ ചടുതലയും പുള്ളിനെ കൂടുതൽ സുന്ദരിയാക്കുന്നു . തൻറെ ചുടുചുംബനത്താൽ ഭൂമിയെ ചുമപ്പിച്ചു കടന്നു പോകുന്ന അസ്തമയസൂര്യനും , താമര കുളവും , കൊയ്തൊഴിഞ്ഞ പാടത്തെ താറാവിന് കൂട്ടങ്ങളും ആ വശ്യസവ്ന്ദര്യത്തിൻറെ മാറ്റു കൂട്ടുന്നു . കൊയ്ത്തു കാലത്തെ പച്ച പട്ടും ഒരു സ്വർണഖനി എന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പികുമാറുള്ള വിളവെടുപ്പ് സമയവും സമയത്തിനും കാലാവസ്ഥക്കും അതീതമാണ് തൻറെ സവ്ന്ദര്യം എന്ന് ഓര്മപെടുത്തികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു .ജീവിച്ചു തീർത്ത ഇന്നലെകളുടെ ഓർമ്മകളുടെ ഓര്മ പെടുത്തലുകൾ ഇല്ലാതെ , ലാഭ നഷ്ട കണക്കിന്റെ തുലാസിൽ അസ്വസ്ഥമാകാൻ മനസിന് ഇടം നൽകാതെ ; ഒരു ദിവസം അതാണ് പുള്ളു തന്നെ തേടി വരുന്ന ഏതൊരാൾക്കും സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്. ഇനിയും വരച്ചു തീരാത്ത ഒരു canvas ആയി പ്രകൃതി നിറഞ്ഞാടുമ്പോൾ മനസിലെ വിഴുപ്പു ഭാണ്ഡങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം ഇറക്കിവച്ചു ഒരു അപ്പൂപ്പൻതാടി പോലെ പുള്ളിനോട് യാത്ര പറഞ്ഞു ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോൾ നമുക്കത്രയും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ആരെയോ പിരിയുന്ന ദുഃഖം തോന്നിയില്ലെങ്കിലെ അതിശയോക്തി ഉള്ളു .

Peruvanmala
Peruvanmala is a natural hillock of about hundred metres above sea level and an area of fifty acres situated in Thalakkottukara village. Filled with beautiful greenery this isolated grassland is an ideal place for nature lovers to take a break. On top of the hill there is a temple of Lord Shiva. The whole hillock is under the administration of Cochin Devaswom board. From the top, we can get an eagle’s eye view of Thrissur, Kunnamkulam, Guruvayoor, Wadakanchery areas. Peruvanmala is covered with green meadows and trees. One of the rarest trees, which can be found here, is the 'aalmavu', an amalgamation of a banyan and a mango tree. One can relax under the tree, or on the rocks at the edge of the hillock to enjoy the view and the sunset. Peacocks, said to be common in this area. During the months of August and September, bi-coloured flowering herb, Persian violets locally called Kannanthali (Exacumbicolor), blooms in between the grassy meadows. This endangered medicinal herb is used in Ayurvedic medicines to treat several ailments. The temple well is full almost every season, despite being on such an altitude.

Vehicles will go only ½ km up to the top of the hill and then one has to walk the rest of the way, which is very slippery. It takes about ½ an hour to trek to the top.

കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 18 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ അകലെയായി സാഹസികത ഇഷ്ട്പെടുന്നവര്‍ക്കായി ട്രക്കിംഗിന് പറ്റിയ പ്രകൃതി രമണീയമായ ഒരിടം. പൊന്‍ കുന്ന്മല. കോഴിക്കോട് നിന്നും ബാലുശ്ശേരി പോകുന്ന വഴിക്ക് കാക്കൂര്‍ പഞ്ചായത്തില്‍ 11/4 ബസാറില്‍ നിന്നും ഇടത്തോട്ട് തിരിഞ്ഞ് സംസ്കൃത കോളേജ് റോഡ് വഴി പോയാല്‍ മലയുടെ അടിവാരത്ത് എത്താം. ഇത് വരെ ടാര്‍ ചെയ്ത റോഡ് സൌകര്യം ഉണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ മലയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴി എന്ന ദിശാസൂചക ബോര്‍ഡ് ഒന്നും ഇല്ല. കയറ്റം അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരുവളവ് ഉണ്ട്. അവിടുന്നാണ് മലമുകളിലേക്കുള്ള പാത.

ഇരുമ്പയിര്‍ നിക്ഷേപത്തിന് പേര് കേട്ട സ്ഥലമാണിത്. ഖനനം തുടങ്ങുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശത്തോട് കൂടിയാണ് ഇങ്ങോട്ടേക്ക് റോഡ് സൗകര്യം ഒരുക്കിയത്. എന്നാല്‍ തദ്ദേശീയമായ എതിര്‍പ്പുകള്‍ നിമിത്തം പദ്ധതി പിന്നീട് ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അപൂര്‍വ്വ ഇനത്തില്‍ പെട്ട പക്ഷികളുടെയും ചില ജീവികളുടെയും ഒരു ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥ കൂടിയാണിത്. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പക്ഷിനിരീക്ഷകരുടെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലവും കൂടിയാണ്. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില്‍ അപൂര്‍വമായി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പലതരം ആയുര്‍വ്വേദ പച്ചമരുന്നുകള്‍ ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് സുലഭമായി ലഭിക്കും. വേനലില്‍ പോലും വറ്റാത്ത നീരുവറവകള്‍ മലഞ്ചെരിവില്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ കുടിവെള്ള ക്ഷാമത്തിന് ഒരു പരിധി വരെ പരിഹാരമാണ്. മലയടിവാരത്ത് തീര്‍ത്ഥങ്കര എന്ന ഒരു സ്ഥലമുണ്ട്. ഇവിടെ ഒരു വറ്റാത്ത ഒരു നീരുറവയും സമീപത്തായി ഒരു വാമനക്ഷേത്രവും സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ഒരു അല്പം സാഹസികതയും ധൈര്യവും കൈമുതലായവര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു ദിവസം ചിലവഴിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റിയ ഒരു ഇടമാണിത്. ഇടുങ്ങിയതും ചെങ്കുത്തായതുമായ വഴികള്‍ സഞ്ചാരികളെ അതിശയിപ്പിക്കും. ഇടക്ക് ചെറിയ ഗുഹകള്‍ പോലെ തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പാറയിടുക്കുകളും കാണാം.മുകളില്‍ എത്തിയാല്‍ പിന്നെ കുളിര്‍മയുള്ള കാറ്റ് നിങ്ങളെ വരവേല്ക്കും. ദൂരെ കോഴിക്കോട് നഗരത്തിന്‍റെ കാഴ്ചകള്‍, കക്കയം, വയലട, വയനാടന്‍ മലനിരകള്‍ എന്നിവയും സമീപത്ത് തന്നെയുള്ള ഏലിയോട്ട് മലയുടെ കാഴ്ചയും കണ്‍കുളിര്‍പ്പിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ച്ചയാണ്.
