The Founder of the Society of Jesus, St. IGNATIUS LOYOLA, born in 1491, in Loyola, Spain, the ancestral castle that was the family heritage. Ignatius was trained in arms and in the etiquette of court life. As he lay convalescing at Loyola, after being wounded at the siege of Pamplona he conceived a burning desire to follow Christ like the heroic saints of the past, whose lives he was given to read

. He began this new life at the age of 31 by having recourse to severe penance and long hours of prayer at Manresa. He recorded these experiences in the book of Spiritual Exercises, which became the school of spirituality of every Jesuit after him. His age did not deter him from pursuing formal education from grammar school to college. He took his Master’s from Sorbonne University, Paris. At the same time, he won over a group of brilliant and like-minded university men (one of whom was St.Francis Xavier, the eponymous Patron of our college), moulded them with the Spiritual Exercises and welded them into a well-knit band which became the Society of Jesus in 1540. He died in Rome in 1556 after having guided the society as its first General for fifteen years. The members of the society of Jesus are popularly known as Jesuits, who render spiritual, educational, social and personal services to all sections of society as an integral part of the Catholic Church The three branches of palm leaves on the right side of the emblem signify that our institution is situated in Tirunelveli District. The ear of rice corn arched on the left side of the emblem represents Maruthanilam. The local symbol connected by a cross highlights the fact that ours is a Christian Institution. At the top of the cross, the college motto, Veritate Lumen et Vita (Life and Light through Truth)is inscribed. The shield at the front of the cross, has two divisions. On the right IHS., the Jesuit motto is inscribed. The squares on the left indicate the spiritual, moral, emotional, and intellectual development that education fosters in a person. The emblem thus means that St.Xavier’s College is a Jesuit institution of higher learning established in the Tirunelveli District for the all round development of its pupils. இவர் 1525 ஆம் ஆண்டு பாரிஸ் நகரில் தனது கல்லூரிப்படிப்பை முடித்தார். அங்குதான் லயோலா நகர் புனிதர் இக்னேசியஸ் (Ignatius Loyola) அவர்களின் நட்பை பெற்றார். 1534 ஆம் ஆண்டு பிரான்சிஸ் சவேரியார் தனது நான்கு நண்பர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து புனித மரியன்னையின் முன் தனது வார்த்தைப்பாடுகளை பெற்றனர். பின்னர் 24 ஜூன் 1537 ஆம் ஆண்டு வெனிசில் (Venice) தனது குருப்பட்டம் பெற்றார். பிறகு 1538 ஆம் ஆண்டு இக்னேசியஸ் உரோம் நகரில் நிறுவிய இயேசு சபைக்கு உதவினார். அச்சபையானது 27 செப்டம்பர் 1540 ஆம் ஆண்டு திருத்தந்தை 3ஆம் பவுல் அவர்களின் அங்கீகாரம் பெற்றது. இதற்காக சவேரியார் பல பணிகளை செய்து உதவினார். அதன்பிறகு 1541 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏபர்ல் 7ஆம் நாள் தனது 35 ஆம் வயதில் மறைபரப்பு பணிக்காக இந்தியாவை நோக்கி பயணம் செய்தார்.

இவர் 13 மாதங்கள் கப்பலில் பயணம் செய்து கோவாவை அடைந்தார். அங்கு அவர் 2 ஆண்டுகள் மீன்பிடி தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்ட மக்களிடையே வேலை செய்து மறைப்பணியாற்றினார். 1544 ஆம் ஆண்டில் ஒரு சில மாதங்களில் ஏறக்குறைய 10,000 மீனவர்களை மனமாற்றி திருமுழுக்கு கொடுத்தார். 1545 ஆம் ஆண்டு சென்னையை நோக்கி பயணம் செய்து, பின்னர் மலாக்கா தீவை (Malakka) அடைந்தார். அவர் சென்ற இடமெல்லாம் மொழியை கற்றுக்கொண்டு, மறைப்பணியாற்றி திருமுழுக்கு கொடுத்து மக்களை கிறிஸ்தவர்களாக மாற்றினார். அச்சமயத்தில், தான் ஆற்றும் பணிகளை குறித்து ரோமிற்கு கடிதம் ஒன்றையும் எழுதினார். இவர் ஏறக்குறைய 1500 மடல்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

அதன்பிறகு 1547ஆம் ஆண்டில் மலாக்கா தீவிலிருந்து மறைப்பரப்புப்பணிக்காக ஜப்பான் நோக்கி பயணம் செய்தார். அங்கும் 100 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு திருமுழுக்குக்கொடுத்து திருமறையை பரப்பினார். 1550ஆம் ஆண்டு தன்னுடன் சில இயேசு சபை மறைப்பணியாளர்களை அழைத்து கொண்டு ஜப்பானில் மியாக்கோ (Miyako) என்ற இடத்திற்கு கால்நடையாகவே நடந்து சென்று மறைப்பணியாற்றினார். அங்கு அவரின் உடல்நிலை பாதிக்கப்பட்டதால் மீண்டும் 1551ல் இந்தியாவை நோக்கி பயணமானார். அப்போது தான் இவர் இந்தியாவில் நிறுவிய சபைகளுக்குத் தலைவர் பொறுப்பை ஏற்கும் செய்தியை கேட்டார். இந்தியாவை அடைந்து சிலகாலம் பணியாற்றியபின் சீனாவிலும், மறைப்பணி ஆற்றவேண்டுமென்ற பேராவலில் தனது 46 வது பிறந்தநாளை 1552 ஆம் ஆண்டு சிறப்பித்த பின் சீனாவை நோக்கி பயணம் செய்தார்.

அப்போது சான்சியான் தீவை அடைந்தார். அங்குதான் போர்த்துக்கீசியர்களும் சீன வியாபாரிகளும் சந்தித்தனர். அவர். அம்மக்களிடையே அவ்விடத்தில் மறைப்பணியாற்றினார். அங்கு சிலர் இவருக்கெதிராக செயல்பட்டனர். இதனால் அவர் அம்மக்களால் பிடிபட்டார். ஏராளமான இடங்களில் மறைப்பணியாற்றிய சவேரியார் உடல் நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு தன் சக்தியை இழந்தார். பணி செய்ய முடியாத நிலையில் மக்களின் இதயங்களில் இடம் பிடித்து நற்பணியாற்றினார். அனைவரும் இவரைக் கண்டு வியக்கும் விதத்தில் இறைவனடி சேர்ந்தார். இவரின் உடல் இயேசு சபையினரால் எடுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டு கோவாவில் வைக்கப்பட்டது. இன்று வரை அழியாமல் உள்ள இவரின் உடலை உலகின் பல பகுதி மக்களுக்கும் கோவா சென்று அவரை தரிசித்து புதுமைகளை பெற்று வருகின்றனர்.
