INTRODUCTION OF NEW SUBURBAN SERVICES IN CHENNAI

Five new EMUs will be introduced in Chennai – Tiruvallur and Chennai – Gummidipundi corridor at a function to be held at Chennai Central at 15.30 hrs. on 18.3.2012. Thiru Saidai V. Duraisamy, Worshipful Mayor of Chennai will flag off the inaugural EMU between Chennai Central – Tiruvallur at the function which will be presided over by Thiru Dayanidhi Maran, Hon’ble M.P. Tmt. Vasanthi Stanley,Thiru T.K. Rangarajan & Thiru N. Balaganga, Hon’ble M.Ps, Thiru K. Nallathambi, M.L.A. and other dignitaries will be present on the occasion.

Regular services of the following EMUs in the Chennai region will commence from 19.3.2012, as per the timings mentioned against each.

1 Duronto Express These are the non-stop point to point trains (except for operational stops) introduced in 2009 connecting metros and major state capitals and are faster than Rajdhani Express. They consist of first AC, two-tier AC, three-tier AC and sleeper classes.
2 Rajdhani Express These are air-conditioned trains linking major cities to New Delhi. They are one of the fastest trains in India, travelling at about 140 km (87 mi) per hour. There are only a few stops on a Rajdhani route.
3 Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express These are air-conditioned and non-airconditioned respectively intercity trains for day travel. They have only seats and not berths.
4 Garib Rath These trains contain AC three-tier and AC chair car coaches with fares less than the fares for the same classes in other trains. They are almost as fast as Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains.
5 Superfast Express These trains have an average speed greater than 55 km (34 mi) per hour. The tickets for these trains have an additional superfast surcharge.
6 Express and Mail trains These are the most common kind of trains in India. They have more stops than their superfast counterparts but they stop only at relatively important intermediate stations.
7 Passenger and Fast Passenger These are slow trains that stop at most stations along the route and have the cheapest fare. The trains generally have unreserved seating accommodation but some night trains have sleeper and 3A coaches.
8 Suburban trains These trains operate in urban and suburban areas, usually stop at all stations and have unreserved seating accommodation. They have the same cheap fare as passenger trains. Monthly and quarterly tickets for suburban trains are subsidised.

PROVISION FOR CARRYING OF ID PROOF FOR ALL AC CLASSES DURING JOURNEY ON RESERVED TICKETS

Similar to Tatkal and e-ticket passenger, any one of the passengers/ passenger booking tickets from computerised passenger reservation system (PRS) and internet(i-ticket), undertaking journey in upper class (First AC, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, AC Chair Car and Executive classes) will have to carry any one of the prescribed original proof of identity during the journey to establish their identity. The passengers who fail to produce the same will be treated without ticket and charged accordingly.

This procedure will come into effect from 15.2.2012.

The details of valid proof of identity are as under:

1) Voter Photo identity card issued by Election Commission of India
2) Passport
3) Pan Card issued by Income Tax Department
4) Driving Licence issued by RTO
5) Photo Identity card having serial number issued by Central/State Government
6) Student Identity Card with photograph issued by recognised school/college for their students
7) Nationalised Bank Passbook with photograph
8) Credit Cards issued by Banks with laminated photograph
9) Unique Identification Card “Aadhaar”

1)Chennai Central – Nagercoil Special and Nagercoil – Chennai Central Superfast Special (via. Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudunagar, Tirunelveli): T.No.06021 Chennai Central – Nagercoil Special will leave Chennai Central at 22.30 hrs. on 13.1.2012 and arrive Nagercoil at 14.00 hrs. the next day.T.No.06022 Nagercoil – Chennai Central Superfast Special will leave Nagercoil at 12.40 hrs. on 17.1.2012 and arrive Chennai Central at 03.30 hrs. the next day.The composition of the trains will be 1 AC 2-tier, 2 AC 3-tier, 12 Sleeper Class, 6 General Second Class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches.The trains will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Vanchi Maniyachchi, Tirunelveli and Valliyur. Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudunagar, Tirunelveli): T.No.06023 Chennai Central – Nagercoil Superfast Special will leave Chennai Central at 20.00 hrs. on 14.1.2012 and arrive Nagercoil at 11.00 hrs. the next day.T.No.06024 Nagercoil – Chennai Central Superfast Special will leave Nagercoil at 19.40 hrs. on 16.1.2012 and arrive Chennai Central at 10.40 hrs. the next day.The composition of the trains will be 1 AC 2-tier, 2 AC 3-tier, 12 Sleeper Class, 4 General Second Class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches.The trains will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Vanchi Maniyachchi, Tirunelveli and Valliyur. INAUGURATION OF NEW BROAD GAUGE LINE BETWEEN NAGORE - KARAIKAL

The new broad gauge line between Nagore and Karaikal will be opened for passenger traffic on 17.12.2011 (Saturday).Thiru K.H. Muniyappa, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Railways will inaugurate the new broad gauge line and flag off the Karaikal – Chennai Egmore Express at a function to be held at Karaikal at 19.30 hrs. on 17.12.2011. Thiru V. Narayanasamy, Hon’ble Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Hon’ble Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension will preside over the function in the presence of Thiru N. Rangasamy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Puducherry. Thiru V. Vaithilingam, Hon’ble Leader of Opposition, Puducherry, Thiru M. Chandrakasu, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture, Govt. of Puducherry, Thiru K.A. Jayapal, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Hon’ble MPs, MLAs and other dignitaries will participate in the above function.

For booking Tatkal e-tickets, the passenger shall enter the ID proof type and number, which is to be used for travel. These details will be printed on the ERS/VRM as well as in the reservation chart.

During the journey, the passenger, whose identity card number has been indicated on the ticket, will have to produce original proof of identity indicated on the ticket, failing which all the passengers booked on the ticket shall be treated as travelling without ticket and charged accordingly.
