Varanasi:Varanasi is solace. Varanasi is peace. Varanasi is serene. Varanasi is everything a troubled heart seeks for and much more. Nobody knows when was this city established, leave alone who established it. Hindus maintain that the city is outside the earth and is situated on the 'Trident' of Lord Shiva. This might feel like a bit to cocky but everybody maintain, including non-Hindus that Banaras is simply out of this world. By the way Varanasi has been named after the two tributaries of Ganges that flows through the city named Varuna and Assi rivers. It was later changed to Benaras and re-christened Varanasi.

The city is known as the cultural capital of India; a sobriquet it truly deserves. The city has been the seat of learning since time immemorial. Various scholarly books have been written on the serene environment of this place. Tulsi Das composed Ram Charit Manas in this city only. A temple named Tulsi Manas Mandir marks this place. Even today, the city boasts off as many as 6 different universities within its fold, a feat almost unmatchable in India. Banaras Hindu University, popularly called BHU, is the largest residential University in Asia. The city is also famous for its various temples. Kashi Vishwanath Mandir is considered the most important Jyotirlinga in India. This temple has been constructed and razed to ground numerous times in the course of History. Equally important are Sankat Mochan and Durga temple. While the former is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, a Bengali Maharani built the later in the 18th century in order to appease goddess Durga. Bharat Mata Mandir is unique in its own. The temple is dedicated to the human manifestation of India called Bharat Mata. The temple doesn't have any statue; instead it has a relief map of India carved out of Marble.

Any discussion on Varanasi is incomplete without mentioning its Ghats. There are more than 80 different ghats in Varanasi but the most notable among them are Dasaswamedh, Assi and Manikarnika ghats. The last one is renowned all over the world for cremation. The city is also famous for its silk embroidery work and has a specialty in Sarees. The city is also renowned for its musical instruments such as Sitar, Tabla and Shehnai. And yes, last but not the least any discussion on Banaras can be sealed without mentioning the mouth-watering Paan. Do take a mouthful before you say adieu to the city.

I remember the day when I arrived Varanasi. Initial feelings were diverse. Through the narrow and crowded roads I was taken to the heart of city. In the city everywhere I saw the crowd. And although excited, there was sense of negative judgement. I arrived at my room and immediately locked myself for the rest of afternoon with still the mixed feelings.

I spent my afternoon in my room questioning myself if the decision of quitting job and coming to India was a wise decision. I was in India to find myself, but initial impression was not up to the expected mark.

I slept for hours and woke up to find reddish rays of evening Sun finding their way in through the windows, while a faint sound of classical Indian music came from somewhere distant. The sound of Indian flute and the soft breeze accompanying the rays of light from the window were enchanting. Was the darkness in my heart afraid of this enchantment? Yes it was...

I then went to the iconic ‘Ghats’ at the bank of river Ganges for the first time. I wish I were a writer good enough to narrate how magical that atmosphere was. Redness of the setting sun covered the land. The breeze touched my face softly. Pink in evening light, otherwise white birds flew up and down the riverbed. Red and yellow flags flapped on the peaks of temples. And little boats crawled over calm surface of the holy river.

There was a warmth in air. Warmth, a form of energy that aided the forces that were fighting the darkness within me. There was life everywhere, not the crowd. By that time I had started to prefer the word ‘life’ over the word ‘crowd’. There was peace in the crowd. There was silence in the noise.

I walked through narrow alleys of Banaras. Narrow if you talk about physical width, but very wide when you can see their spiritual and intellectual forte.I learned lessons from the ancient city of wisdom what I never expected to learn from that rusted but beautiful place. This city told me significance of privileges in our lives that we take for granted. I learned how there can be happiness inside you when you have so little in your pockets. I learned why happiness and materialism are unrelated to each other.

I thank you Banaras and Varanasi Walks & Activities for showing me the way to enlightenment.

"The city illumines truth and reveals reality. It  does not bring new wonders into the scope of  vision, but enable one to see what is already  there. Where the eternal light intersects the  earth, it is known as Kashi.
