सम्पूर्ण गढ़वाल में प्रकाश पर्व बग्वाल की रात प्रकाशपुंज *( भैलो )* खेलने की परम्परा रही है... यह परम्परा गढ़वाल में 16वीं सदी से 1627 वर्ष में एक बड़ी घटना के करण प्रारम्भ हुई !

उस दौरान गढ़वाल श्रीनगर दरबार में *राजा महपत शाह* का शासनकाल था...! तिब्बत से तिब्बतियों के बार बार आक्रमण हो रहे थे..
महपत शाह के शासन काल में दो भड़ो का बड़ा बोलबाला रहा है *भड़ माधो सिंह भंडारी* प्रमुख सेनापति थे... व दूसरे सेनापति *भड़ रिखोला लोदी* रिखोला लोदी दक्षिण गढ़वाल की सीमा से हो रहे आक्रमणों को रोकने दक्षिणी सीमा (भाबर व कालागढ़ ) सीमा पर तैनात थे...!
परन्तु ज़ब तिब्बत से राजा शौका की सेने ने गढ़वाल पर आक्रमण कर दिया तो व्यथित हो महपत शाह ने *भड़ माधोसिंह भंडारी* के नेतृत्व में तिब्बत की ओर सेना भेज दी... छः महीने तक युद्ध चलता रहा..युद्ध लड़ते लड़ते माधो सिंह भंडारी अपनी युद्धकौशल कला व असीम शक्ति से तिब्बती सेना को गाजर मुली की तरह काटते हुए अंदरूनी तिब्बत तक खेदड दिया... और वहाँ तिब्बत और गढ़वाल की सीमा पर एक लंबी पाषाण सीमा रेखा का निर्माण कर दिया जैसे इतिहास में आज भी *मैक मोहन सीमा रेखा* के नाम से वर्णित किया जाता है....!
