BRO announced on April 24 that it has opened the Leh-Manali national highway in record time. More than a month has passed but still the road is not opened for regular vehicular traffic. Still, the highway is opened for one directional traffic on alternate days basis causing huge inconvenience to tourists, local residents and truckers. It has happened despite very less snowfall this winter season. Earlier, the road used to be open normally in mid-May despite heavy winter snowfall.

It's 29th of April, 2024, and still snowing in Himachal Pradesh. The videos are from Manali's Atal tunnel (Dhundi) where snowfall drew thousands of tourists who later ended up getting stuck as road surface became slippery. Manali police had to come for rescue.

The Manali-Leh national highway (NH-3), which was closed for traffic movement since April 20, 2023 following winter snowfall, has been thrown open for military vehicles as Border Roads Organisation (BRO) completed its snow clearance operations on Tuesday (April 23, 2024). As many stretches of the road are still slippery and narrow, only Indian Army vehicles will be allowed first. As condition improves, the civil administrations of Ladakh and Himachal will take decision to allow civilian vehicles including tourists. The process may take upto a week. Solang-Atal Tunnel, Rohtang road during snowfall today (Friday). The road to Atal tunnel and Lahaul valley is closed for all vehicles following heavy snowfall in the region. Nearly 500 vehicles carrying nearly 2,000 tourists, who had stranded at the south portal of Atal tunnel, were rescued in late night rescue operations. Many vehicles were left behind.
