Shultankeshwar Mahadev resides in Madhavpur village, 15 kilometers away from Varanasi city. Nandi is seated in this temple along with Hanuman ji, Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya. The priest of the temple told that Madhav Rishi had established Shivling here for the worship of Shiva before the descent of Ganga.

The sages and sages who did penance on the banks of the Ganges named this Shivling as Shooltankeshwar. The belief behind this was that just as the suffering of the Ganga was removed here, similarly the suffering of other devotees should be removed. This is the reason why devotees come here for darshan throughout the year, but there is more crowd of devotees in Sawan to get rid of their sufferings.
