A family of chimpanzees wanders in the forest at Mahale National Park on Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.
Rising eastward from the shoreline, the Greater Mahale Ecosystem encompasses 4.8 million acres of mostly forested landscape. This ecosystem is home to approximately 93 percent of Tanzania’s 2,800 endangered chimpanzees, only some of which live within Mahale Mountains National Park. The Tuungane (pronounced TOO-un-gah-nee, Kiswahili for “Let’s Unite”) project is a collaboration between TNC and Pathfinder International, a global reproductive health organization. TNC and Pathfinder are also engaging other stakeholders to achieve holistic, large-scale impact, including Frankfurt Zoological Society, Jane Goodall Institute, Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Tongwe Trust, and the Government of Tanzania. Since it's implementation in 2012, eight new Village Land Use Plans earmark 228,000 acres as village forest reserves to protect key chimp habitat, and 37 forest scouts have been trained and deployed. 🙌

The Kruger National Park is home to 13,000 elephants, 5,000 giraffes, 3,000 hippos and more than 1,600 lions; It is the largest natural reserve in the country.

A Rock Beauty fish photographed in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, Bahamas. The Nature Conservancy recently released the results of a study that focused on reef-adjacent activities and the value they generate for the tourism industry, island governments, and Caribbean communities. A major draw for people traveling to the Caribbean are activities related to coral reef ecosystems, and both the tourism industry and other aspects of the local economies depend on healthy coral reefs to keep this relationship afloat. This evidence offers a pivotal opportunity for advancing coral conservation initiatives not only in the Caribbean but around the world, as it can catalyze both the tourism industry and local governments and communities to invest in protecting and restoring coral reefs for the benefit of economies and incomes. Do you know the difference between a mammoth and a mastodon? They have a lot in common. So much, in fact, they’re often confused for one another. Both are large and hairy distant cousins of modern elephants. Both were proboscideans, so they had trunks. So, how can you tell these extinct behemoth herbivores apart? It’s all in the head! Mastodons had flatter heads and more linear tusks. Mammoths had a distinctive k**b on top of their skulls and their tusks grew at a curve. Of these fossils, can you tell which one is which?

You might be surprised to find out that this violet coral (Clavaria zollingeri) isn’t a coral at all…it’s a mushroom! Rather than growing underwater, this fungus is found in woodlands and grasslands around the world, including Australia, North America, Asia, and Europe. Instead of a cap-topped fruiting body, this species has branch-like clusters that point upwards. Like many fungi, violet coral plays an important role in its ecosystem by breaking down dead organic matter and recycling nutrients.
