What are seashells doing in the desert of southern Iraq? 🐪🌵

In the ancient city of Eridu, seashells are scattered across the archaeological site. But how did they end up here?

Historically, the Euphrates River flowed near Eridu and Ur, and according to cuneiform texts, each city had its own port by the sea. Eridu was situated on the river’s left bank, while the right bank constantly faced erosion and flooding.

The presence of these seashells is no coincidence; Eridu was built along the Euphrates before the river shifted its course due to geographical or economic factors.

ماذا تفعل الأصداف البحرية في صحراء جنوب العراق؟ 🐪🌵

في مدينة أريدو، عندما تنظر إلى الأرض، تجد الأصداف البحرية منتشرة في الموقع الأثري. كيف وصلت إلى هنا؟

قديماً، كان نهر الفرات يمر بالقرب من أريدو وأور، ووفق النصوص المسمارية، كان لكل مدينة ميناء على البحر. أريدو كانت تقع على الضفة اليسرى للنهر، بينما تعرضت الضفة اليمنى للتعرية والفيضانات باستمرار.

وجود الأصداف هنا ليس صدفة؛ فأريدو تأسست على ضفاف الفرات قبل تغيّر مجراه لأسباب جغرافية أو اقتصادية.
