The Silk Road and the routes across Iran!

The Silk Roads, as the oldest trading and communication network across the world, have connected many civilizations for millennia, bringing together peoples, cultures and economies. The roads provided a ground not only for the exchange of goods but also for the interactions of ideas and cultures that have shaped a part of our world today. The people living along the Silk Roads enjoy diverse cultures, religions and languages, and as a result of their interactions, they have influenced each other.

Let's enjoy the Dorud – Andimeshk route, one part of the marvelous 866-mile Trans-Iranian Railway connecting the Caspian Sea in the northeast with the Persian Gulf in the southwest.
The railway was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as one of the engineering masterpieces of the 20th century.
Dorud – Andimeshk route crosses the Zagros Mountains in the west part of Iran.
The route is a showcase of stunning landscapes and sceneries. The train moves along a spiral path, passing highlands, bridges over rivers, dense oak-tree forests, plains, and tunnels.
The highest bridges and longest tunnels of the Trans-Iranian Railway were built in this rough mountainous area, and that is one of the most extraordinary features of the Trans-Iranian Railway.

Last night was Chaharshanbe Suri across Iran. This ancient event has been around since 1700 BC and has been celebrated every year since then. On this night which is always the last Tuesday night of the year, we make big fires and set off fireworks in the streets.

Located in northwest Iran, Talesh lies to the southwest of the Caspian Sea, west of the Alborz Mountain range. It has a sub-tropical climate with a lush green landscape. The highlands of it makes up almost three-quarters of the area of Talesh and is covered by dense deciduous forests and meadows. Pastoralists and seminomadic tribes make up the majority of the population of Talesh. The last picture is of their summer fixed tents called “Kapar”.

Yaldā is the traditional Iranian celebration of the winter solstice – the longest night of the year. The ritual symbolizes the rebirth of light following the darkest night. On this cosmically important night, family members gather together in the home of the family elder (typically grandparents, parents, or great aunts and uncles) to share special snacks and foods. This most special night of the year brings much anticipation. People run in the streets shopping in preparation, chat with one another about the guests they are expecting, and compare plans for how they are going to set their tables. Is it a night to be happy and reflective, and to enjoy being alive with those nearest and dearest to you. Check out our new post on our website if you want to read more about this event and happy Yalda everyone, wish you a spectacular night.

Nomadic life is an essential part of many Iranian people. With about 4 million nomads in the country and many tribes across it, we have a wide range of interesting lifestyles, handicrafts, foods and traditions peculiar to each one of them. This tribes mostly do a seasonal migration in their respective regions. You can read more about them on the link bellow:

In the meanwhile enjoy a part of the documentary “Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life” made in 1925 about a branch of the Bakhtiari tribe of Lurs during their seasonal migration. This movie is considered to be one of the earliest ethnographic documentary films in the history. In this part they are crossing the river Karun using rafts with inflated goat skins underneath.

Taarof is one of the most used Persian etiquettes between Iranians that might be a tad confusing to people from different cultures. It is a term used for back and forth pleasantries between two or more people when facing pretty much every circumstance, even a mundane and routine action like paying for your food or transportation may be filled with this gestures and words that will not make a lot of sense if you start to translate it.
Usually every scenario have its own sentences to use and it’s a way to show your appreciation and respect for the work or action that the person(s) in front of you is doing. It can be hard to differentiate a Taarof from a genuine request, if you ever get a Taxi in Iran the driver might refuse your payment the first time or when you go shopping for anything the sales person will definitely assure you that a payment is not needed but it is Taarof and it is customary to refuse his/her demand and pay no matter what!
But at the end you can get a feel of what is Taarof or not after some (maybe baffling) conversations and maybe you will start to enjoy it even who knows!
What other Iranian etiquettes have you encountered that was interesting to you?

Many places in Iran has begun to open their doors to the general public. As of now most cafes, cinemas, restaurants, malls and historical places are open and running throughout the country. Lately theaters have join this group and from this week, plays which were on hold because of the quarantine are going onstage after a long pause.
City Theater or “Taatr-E Shahr” (تئاتر شهر) in Persian was built in 1972 as a modern performing arts complex in the heart of Tehran Capital. It was designed by the famous Iranian architect Ali Sardar Afkhami in the 1960s and it has been the face of Theater in Iran from its opening. The first play ever performed in this complex was The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov and from there many plays have been done in this complex and many actors have walk on its stage.
The complex has 5 halls in General but 2 of them have been closed for quite some time. The halls are connected to each other through maze like underground corridors that you will certainly get lost in if you don’t know your way with access to back stages.
Outside of the building was always a place for street plays and show men to perform in and recently free style dancers are performing at the back of the complex for the general public. Beside that it is filled with artists, people interested in art and a hangout place for debating art works and holding a valuable conversation.
It is located in the center of the city and if you ever find yourself there do not even hesitate in seeing it.

Being from ancient and a one of a kind structure in the world made Tchogha Zanbil the first world heritage site of Iran in 1979.
It was made by the Elamite king Untash-Napirisha (1275-1240 BCE) as a religious complex and it is considered to be the oldest building in . This Ziggurat was made in dedication to Inshushinak and Napirisha, two Elamite divinities and it is one of the best preserved and biggest Ziggurats in the world.
The first usage of glass in Iran is believed to be from this complex in the shapes of tubes going into the bricks for better support. It was found by accident when workers were digging for oil in the area and it has been cared for ever since.
It’s located 80 km north of in province and although it is half of what it used to be (there’s only 3 floors left of the 5 floors), it is worth visiting.
