Types of Rock Climbing

You might think rock climbing is just a sport like the rest. But it’s complicated and divided into so many groups that they may confuse you. Here is a short list of rock climbing types which can help you figure out.

Free solo

Free solo is the easiest type of climbing to describe. There are no ropes or harnesses involved and your only equipment is your hands and legs. In addition, if you fall, you should start from the beginning again if you are lucky enough to cheat death for one more day!
Free soloing is considered to be one of the most dangerous types of rock climbing despite the joy you have because the freedom of movement. The list of people who have died from falling while free soloing is not short at all. So, if you want to live a long life, use your harness and rope.

Bouldering

In bouldering, you do not use any ropes or harnesses as well. It is not as dangerous as free soloing since the height of the walls are no higher than 6.1 meters high. So, the amount of injuries are less. Bouldering is mostly done in indoor sites and on artificial walls. There are bouldering mats in case of falling. It can take place on real walls but it may cause damage due to overuse of holds.

Free Climbing

In free climbing there are ropes and harnesses involved. You can climb with the help of footholds and handholds. Note that the rope just prevents major injuries in case of falling and it does not assist climbers on their way up. It is divided into two types: Sport Climbing and Traditional Climbing. There are slight differences between these two types. For example, traditional climbers use cams, chocks and other hardware into cracks in the rock to protect themselves from falling. On the other hand, sport climbers use quick draws to climb routes that have preplaced bolts as a protection.

Speed Climbing

In speed climbing, as well as the name says, speed is the goal. Speed climbing competitions take place on artificial walls. Walls are usually 15 meters high. In speed climbing, the two climbers race side by side. They sprint and jump to be the first one who gets to the top. It is also easy for spectators to relate with the match because whoever get to the tip first, is the winner!

Lead Climbing

In lead climbing, people climb in groups of two or more. The first climber to climb the route is called the lead climber. The lead climber is protected by the rope attached to his harness. The other end of the rope is held by the second climber, who is called belayer. The belayer runs the rope through a belay device and feeds rope out as the lead climber rises. If the lead climber falls, the belayer grabs the rope to arrest the fall.
Ice Climbing

Ice climbing is like rock climbing but the surface is different. Moreover, climbing equipment is different. Glacier and frozen waterfalls are popular sites for ice climbers. Ice climbing is better to be done in pairs. Mostly climbers do ice climbing as a part of their mixed climbing program in which involves climbing on ice, rock and snow.

Rock Climbing Techniques

Rock climbing is a sport which is about the power and potential of your body for vertical ascends. Though today it is more than just a sport. It has become an art and obviously rock climbers have become artists. It is not easy to gain such physical ability but nowadays all rock climbers are fully fit. The only thing which makes them different from each other is their creativity and state of mind. In other words, they do not power their way up the wall, they use their technique and moves that are designed to help them.

Rock Climbing Workouts

Rock climbing workouts are divided into two groups. The first and most common practice is physical workout. You can Google them and easily find so many practical exercises which help you develop your skills. Plus, your coach can guide you as well. The second group is mental practice.

By mental practice I do not mean yoga although yoga can be a major help. It helps you bringing down your heart rate when you are climbing. Therefore, you can be more focused. On the other hand, while rock climbing increases blood pressure and adrenaline in your blood, yoga decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and helps us recover from a stressful event.

Mental Practices

Speaking of mental practices, I mean workouts that help rock climbers get better understating about the philosophy of climbing. With the help of these activities, they can prime their brain on how to use your feet, how to maintain your balance and how to be more efficient.

Rock climbing is like walking up a ladder, your feet are the foundation unlike the public belief that says hand are the keys. So the most important training should be about how to reinforce your feet. They can practice edging and smearing.

Moreover, they should learn how to distribute the force and power in their muscles. Pins with different sizes have different tolerance.

Balance boards also improve coordination, core strength, neuromuscular integration and they speed up athlete’s reaction time.

Slack lining is also has a major impact on your balance, strengthening the core and it enhances the focus.

Campus board is also a tool which helps climbers can ascend or descend only using their hands.

All About Zard-Kuh

Zard-Kuh (4224m.) which means Yellow Mountain is located in central Zagros mountain range in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province of Iran. Local people call it Zard-Kuh e Bakhtiari. It is in west of Iran and it is the second highest mountain in Zagros mountain range after Dena.
Zard-Kuh is one of the richest sources of water for important river flows such as Karun and Zayande-Rud. It is important because of the pouring rains.

Zard-Kuh region’s levelled mountains provide a great possibility for trekking and you can have levelled summits. Mountaineers mostly start their journey from the Cherry pass and continue their way to Robat Bala, Algeh Bala, Dareh Shoo, and Zard-Kuh pass. In the end you will arrive at the Kouhrang dam that is considered as one of the main resources of mineral water in Iran.
Kolunchin is one of the popular summits in Zard-Kuh region. To ascend Kolunchin from Chelgerd County, you have three paths to take.

First one is the north face which is steep and it is a long a way to the summit. The second one would be the eastern face but there are two routes that mountaineers mostly prefer. One of them is through the valley which is covered with snow during the winter. so, it is almost dangerous and it is not suggested for climbing in winter and it’s good for trekking in spring. The other one is through the east face that is convenient for winter ascends.

The weather in Zard-Kuh is quite cold during the year and climbing is truly dangerous in winter due to the heavy snow and possible danger of avalanche. Therefore, ski mountaineering is recommended from November to May. Moreover, Zard-Kuh is a vast land which is available for skiing during winter or even mid-spring. You can go skiing in Chelgerd ski resort where is located at approximately 2500 above the sea level. During summer, trekking is a good idea in which you can enjoy the spectacular scenery while hiking.
