However, in order to be able to truly and safely enjoy your stay, it is essential to inform yourself of your destination’s rules and cultural codes. Do Watch the Dress Code!
The first and most important thing to keep in mind is the dress code. Women are required to wear hijab in public, meaning that they have to wear a headcover that covers their head, hair, and neck, a manteau which is basically a long, loose coat or overshirt that covers your bottom, has long sleeves, and is not low-cut in the bosom, and a pair of pants that covers your ankles and is not ripped. On the other hand, men only have to wear long pants and must not wear shorts or sleeveless tops.
Don’t Bring Alcoholic Drinks!
Consumption of alcoholic drinks of any kind or anything containing alcohol is prohibited in Iran. Although you may hear of or see some alcoholic drinks behind closed doors, remember that Iran’s law forbids people from consuming them. But don’t worry, you can find non-alcoholic beer and other refreshing beverages in every supermarket.
Don’t Shake Hands with Everyone!
While shaking hands is considered the main form of greeting in Iran, always be careful not to shake everyone’s hand. Iran is an Islamic country, meaning that any form of touching of the opposite s*x is not allowed. Although there are also Iranians who don’t mind shaking hands with the opposite s*x, some others are conservative and would refuse your offer. Therefore, it’s better to avoid it in the first place.
Don’t Display Public Signs of Affection!
Being an Islamic country, Iran has prohibited public displays of affection like kissing. But don’t worry, holding hands is normal and common.
Don’t Talk Politics!
Years of political conflicts have turned politics into a hot topic of discussion for Persians. However, there are various ideas and political tendencies and it is impossible to guess the political directions of the person you are talking to. So, it’s better to avoid any talks of politics, especially if it concerns the government and the leader, to be safe. In addition, keep in mind not to take any photos of government buildings, military sites, or anywhere with a ‘No Photography’ sign.
Do Travel to Iran: although some rules and regulations of Iran are different from what you are used to, this must not stop you from discovering this magical land. Remember that obeying these rules is only for a temporary period, but you will have an unforgettable experience in the land of wonders in exchange.

Sean asked: When were you most scared for your life in your travels?
Henry answered: In America, specifically in California. California is the place where I almost died a couple of times. You know, really unfunny stories of real near-death experiences. Other than that, I was in Baghdad. Where two mortars hit near a building that I was in, fortified. The concussion was so strong that it felt like a fist punch, a ghost punch that hit your solar plexus. That was the concussion. It was incredibly strong. On the streets of Cairo, when you leave the hotel or the neighborhood and go into the neighborhood, people often stare at you. And I have been there a couple of times. Every time that's happened to me, I do not feel very good. I felt like I am going home.
And when Sean asked: Which country gave you the most hope for the future of civilization?
Henry answered: That's a great question. When I walk down the streets of Tehran, people speak to me in perfect English:
-Why are you here? Where are you coming from?
-I am from America.
-Are you here alone?
- Yes.
- And why? I have always wanted to come to .
- Thank you for coming here. Please do not kill us. (Where you see they want the future.)
- What about your government?
- I understand, oh, yes.
-What about your government? Oh, yes.
I see that all of a sudden, you have common ground. And so, I have found a lot of hope in my travels. Many people want the same things that you want: clean water, a day without conflict. Basically, a handful of 50s in a day without fear, as they say.

– Iranian domestic version of Amazon – was founded in 2006 and is the largest e-commerce startup company in Iran. It is the most visited website after Google and in Iran. Although the company doesn’t publish its revenue, it has been promised by the founders to be the first Iranian startup company to worth more than $1 billion.
Aparat – Iranian domestic version of Youtube – first began in February 2011, aiming to fill the void of online video sharing due to the fact that Youtube is blocked in Iran. Today it is the most viewed Iranian domestic website in Iran and the 107th most viewed website (by alexa.com) globally.
– Iranian domestic version of Uber – is a ride-hailing service company and was launched in February 2014. It offers services almost all over ranging from passenger (by car and motorcycle) to food to other small packages delivery system.
Other startup companies which by no means are less successful are , , .ir, , , , , and to say the least.
Yet, Iran’s startup is still young and has so much potential. Iran has a large, young, and educated population (highest in the region) and with extremely high internet and smartphone pe*******on (roughly 50 million internet users) – which is nearly half of all the internet users in the ME – it thirsts for large, new companies and ideas.
