The 10th Tehran International Tourism Exhibition opens today at the Tehran Permanent Fairgrounds and will continue until Feb. 9.

Over 60 companies from 21 countries and some 400 Iranian companies are attending the expo themed "See Iran Differently", ISNA reported.

Around 35,700 square meters of space, including 10 halls and more than 17,000 sqm of outdoor space, have been allocated to the exhibition, which signify a 15% increase compared to last year's event.

According to Morteza Rahmani Movahed, tourism deputy at Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, this year's expo is meant to be significantly different from past editions both in terms of quality and quantity.

"We intend to add variety to this year's event. For instance, in Hall 38, Iran's attractions are divided into seven regional categories," he said. Tourism ministers from several countries as well as delegations from Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Switzerland will participate in the exhibition.

"We will focus on branding Iran's tourism exhibition to further promote our country," he said.

Iran's tourism expo has been incorporated in the calendar of United Nation's World Tourism Organization as an international event. The purpose is to expand the scope of Iran's tourism from a regional to a global level.

"We believe that our country must improve to meet international standards," Movahed said. He expressed optimism about the future of Iran's tourism, stressing that global political changes will not have a negative impact on the industry.

"Iran's doors are open to the world and the country will be a popular destination in 2017," he said.

Last year's exhibition was visited by 245,000 people, which experts say could have been higher were it not for the bad timing of the event.

The Tehran expo coincided with the 37th International Fair of Tourism (February 19-22) in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

The largest such expo in southeast Europe and a popular platform among industry professionals, the Serbian event is believed to have overshadowed TITE, drawing tens of thousands of potential visitors away from Tehran.

This year, the exhibition is being held almost two weeks before the Serbian event, so hopes are high for a larger turnout.

Islamic Azad University is planning to host health tourists at its 11 hospitals across the country, announced a senior figure at IAU.

“Medical tourism is the most profitable and stable branch of tourism in Iran,” Dr. Seyyed Ali Abtahi, the university’s deputy for medical sciences, told YJC.

He attributed the profitability of health tourism to Iran’s high medical standards and affordability, which help “draw many from regional countries”.

Ecotourism in Iran
The study of the natural geography of Iran and also, the feasibility of each ecotourism attraction for investment in our country indicates that ecotourism in Iran is a very unique and fruitful economic resource which has so far been untapped.
The exemplary geographical and seasonal diversity of Iran has provided very different species of flora and fauna thus paving a way for the country to avail the benefit of being one of the few countries in the world with such a rich biodiversity. Apart from being home to the world's largest lake in the north of the country, Iran also has a share in twelve hundred kilometers of the coastline in the Persian Gulf towards South. Other notable places are 50 Iranian lakes out of which about 18 are amongst the 59 known terrestrial biosphere reserves. Northwest dense forests of Mazandaran province are the last surviving forests in the world and hence are pretty ancient forests. Besides this, a wide spectrum of desert wilderness composing of factors such as winds, the amount of sand and the maximum temperature of air speaks volumes. Also a variety of customs and a thousand-year old nomadic lifestyle which is consistent with climatic conditions is another worthwhile factor illuminated in this article and at the same time forms an important factor of ecotourism in Iran.
As mentioned above, the benefits of having the most diversified climate means that any investment in the field of ecotourism in Iran is fruitful considering the reliability of the resources. The potential of ecotourism in Iran is much greater as compared to other sectors because of the fact that it is not dependent on redundant factors for tourist attraction and as such there are no issues such as restrictions in cultural tourism market and lack of social context of recreational tourism.
Noticeable points on ecotourism in Iran are as follows:
1. Geographical location;
2. Climate diversity;
3. Diversity of animal and plant (one of the first five countries in the world in terms of natural and biological diversity);
4. High volume of roads and communication routes;
5. Variety of ethnic and tribal culture;
6. High potential to create institutions in the field of studies and ecological trips.

UNWTO calls on Iran to prepare for flow of millions of tourists soon

Berlin, March 9, IRNA -- Secretary General of UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Taleb Rifai disclosed thatmillions of tourists will visit Iran in the near future.

'Iran is one of the most attractive and greatest hosts of tourists at a global level and my prediction is that Iran has to be ready for hosting millions of tourists in the near futue,' Rifai told reporters on Tuesday before the beginning of ITB tourism exhibition in Berlin on Tuesday.

'What we are observing in Iran is only the beginning of one of the biggest tourism developments not only in Iran, but also for the entire region,' he added.

Rifai said that both Iran and UNWTO are determined to boost the Iranian tourism industry and have a joint special plan for the purpose.

'I wished representatives from all world nations were accompanying me in this visit to enjoy the historical attractions of Iran,' he said while recalling his recent visit to Iran.

Rifai said that the UNWTO is ready to use all its capacities to introduce Iran to the world nations.

He noted that in addition to using the electronic means, such as the UNWTO website, for boosting the Iranian tourism attractions there are the live addresses and the international conferences that can be employed for the purpose.

'Unfortunately the world nations are not properly informed about the tourism attractions of Iran and we must use various means to make up for that deficiency,' he said.

The UNWTO chief also praised the appropriate development of the Iranian tourism infrastructures during the past three decades and said that the tourism industry is a good means for promoting peace and friendship cultural around the globe.

UNWTO: Iran ranked 48 in tourist attraction

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) report, Iran placed among the top 50 tourism destinations across the world.

“United Nations World Tourism Organization announced top 50 countries in terms of tourism attractions. By attracting 4.7 million foreign tourists, Islamic republic of Iran ranked 48th in 2013 for the first time since the Islamic Revolution,” said head of UNWTO secretariat in Iran Ali Bagher Nemati, to Mehr News correspondent.

Each year, UNWTO announces only 50 top tourist destination countries and it has been the first time Iran improved its ranking to be added to the list, he added.

Pointing to the importance of obtaining accurate statistics, Nemati stressed need for implementation of a comprehensive system and added “by providing reports according to UNWTO standards, we have done our best to deliver comprehensive statistics to the organization regarding the tourist arrivals across the country.”

“In order to recognize the role of tourism in economic development and its impact on the business, production and national wealth, inclusive statistical procedures are needed to be implemented in the country. In that case we can properly and accurately declare the tourism industry share in economy.”

He added that the World Tourism Organization enjoys comprehensive and valuable information and experiences to help member states develop their tourism industries methodically.

Nemati added that each tourists spends and average of $1,300 whereas Europeans expend more and tourists from neighboring countries spend less. “According to UNWTO, South Asian countries, where Iran is also categorized, earn an average of $1,570 per tourist.”

Nemati estimated Iran’s income from tourism as about 7 billion and 379 million dollars in 2013, while WTO figures indicate the United States as the world's top-earning country from tourism with $128 billion in 2012.
