UNESCO Global Geoparks

UNESCO Geoparks are landscapes with outstanding and unique geological phenomena where sites of international geological significance are used to support sustainable development which are managed with a holistic concept of conservation, protection, interpretation, nature-based tourism, and education and research not just geology but other relevant sciences such as history, ecology, archeology, culture, etc. In other words, they are places where visitors can watch, experience and touch the memory of the earth and allow them to understand the current challenges of our planet. This extension should have management and conservation plans in order to be able to attract public cooperation and increase the economic level of the local community. .At the present time, there are 177 UNESCO global geoparks in 46 countries that among them, China has the largest number of geoparks among Asian countries. .
Fortunately, Iran has the potential for many geoparks. Qeshm island geopark is the first one in the Middle East and the only one in Iran that is registered in the UNESCO global network of geoparks. It is the largest island in the Persian Gulf, with an area of 1500 square kilometers, located at the south of the coastal cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Khamir. This island has valuable nature, animal species, rare plants, special habitats, and charming perspectives are richly found on land and coast across the island. Moreover, it involves a complex of valuable Geo sites (a place that contains rare and valuable geological phenomena) such as Chahkouh, starts valley, Statues valley, Salt dome, Dulab, Salt valley, the roof of Qeshm, Kukura Mountain, etc., which erosion is the most essential cause of their creation.
As another Iran's geopark, Aras geopark is located at the northwest of Iran, along the northern region of the province of East Azerbaijan, and it spread across the whole Jolfa country. Aras geopark involves five geo sites such as Kiamaki Mountain, Alibashi Mountain, Gechi Ghalasi Mountain Maharan and Asyab Kharabeh Waterfalls, each of which consists of unique geological samples. In addition, this geopark is well known for its latitudinal diversity which results in the possibility of various climates existing within its bounds. The highest point in Jolfa region is Mount Kiamaky, with its peak at 3347 meters. The lowest point is in the northern part of the region, in the valley of the Aras River. While the Valley of Aras River is filled with subtropical trees, the western and middle regions are covered in the steppe, and the slopes of the eastern mountains are covered with thick closed-canopy forests. Hopefully, Aras geopark is expected to gain UNESCO status in May 2023.
The third Iranian geopark site, situated in South Khorasan province, presently undergoing preparations for evaluation to join the Global Geopark List is Tabas Geopark that is the only one of its kind. In December 2022, the Supreme Council of World Geopark of UNESCO has given positive vote to the requested file for Tabas Geopark membership. It means that Tabas could be officially registered on the list of UNESCO geoparks in 2023. Nicknamed "the bride of the desert", tabas covers about 50 Geo sites, untouched terrains, scenic landscapes and worthwhile geological phenomena. In addition, thick forests and moving sand dunes conform the unique assembly of the area. Given that, it has a vast potential to be registered as the biggest geopark in West Asia. Due to passing the historic Silk Road through this land, a lot of unforgettable caravanserais was built which are remained to this day since times long passed.

Yalda Legends

Yalda is the longest night of the year, the best reason to be happy, and to communicate in order to make friendship. Yalda is a Syriac word which means birth and in accordance with myths, it is the night of the birth of the sun. For Iranian people, it is one of the most beautiful and important ancient customs. A night to remember us that" like that joy's time remained not; like this grief's time shall not remain. But the philosophy of this night as the winter solstice is the exact moment when half of the earth is titled the farthest away from the sun. Naming this night as Shab (night) Cheleh (40) is firstly because of the holiness of the number 40, and secondly, the coldest time of the winter comes just 40 days after Yalda. This night brings many customs along and it also intertwined with foodstuffs and eating them when gathering together to bond friendship, like other Iranian costumes. In the past, the people believed that eating these foodstuffs are good for immune system boosting throughout the year. According to the belief of the ancients, 40 foodstuffs, and nowadays, they believe that 7 foodstuffs should be served on Yalda sofreh (a generic term for a cloth on which food is served). Watermelon, pomegranate, and winter nuts are the main foodstuffs of Yalda sofreh. One of the reasons of choosing watermelon and pomegranate is their red color, because red color is the color of blood, birth and life. Pomegranate is the symbol of correlation. In addition, Iranian pomegranate is well known. Moreover, the people in the past believed that eating watermelon on the last night of the fall keep the bodies and hearts refreshed during the summer.
Yalda Legends
We have heard many stories about Yalda, but one of the most interesting of them is the legend which is transferred from one generation to the other in Lorestan province. On the basis of this legend and according to our culture, the sun is a pretty woman. The moon falls in love with the sun and for a long time looks for an opportunity to express his love to this beautiful fiery ball, but unfortunately, he always falls asleep at the very beginning of the morning. One night, the moon, impatient and worried, asks Venus or as some say, Mercury, to wake him up when the sun comes up so that he can explain this love story to his lover. This event happens and eventually by accepting the love of the moon from the sun, the conversation between them lasts, so the sun rises one minute later and endows us Yalda as a gift.

The second legend that is known as Naneh Sarma (a legendary figure in Iranian folklore):
A cold day the wind brought Naneh Sarma form the sky to the ground. She had two sons named Cheleh Bozorg (big) and Cheleh koochak (small). Cheleh bozorg who was so kind, was the ruler of the earth for 40 days from the first day of winter, and then, Cheleh Koochak was the ruler for 20 days. He was not as kind as his brother, everywhere was covered by cold and frost, and no matter how much his elder brother asked him to be a little kinder and less strict, and it did not help; until Cheleh koochak was arrested by a new ruler and imprisonment in an iceberg. The worrying and upset Naneh Sarma after thinking a lot attempted to melt the snow and the ice of the mountain with her hot breath and release her son, which fortunately she succeeded. Afterwards, she began to clean the house and had everything ready for Amu Nowruz (one of the ancient Persian legends. Symbolically, the arrival of spring and Persian New Year) arrival. However, she falls asleep on the promised date. She had to wait another year to meet Amu Nowruz. Of course, the legends say that they meet each other sometimes, and occurring storm is the sign of such meeting.

Yalda night costumes and activities
Making fire, gathering around Korsi (a type of low table with a heater underneath it, and blanket thrown over it, known as a traditional item of furniture in the Iranian culture), reading stories (every city has its own stories), reading poems and Shahnameh (a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi), taking Fa'le Hafez (You ask Hafez a question asking him for guidance. Then you open his book of poems randomly. Hafez will answer you through his poetry), Yalda gift for the bride, cooking Ash (a kind of Iranian watery food), group games, Yalda table setting with winter nuts, watermelon, pomegranate, perfume and fire pit are among the customs and activities of this night.
