“The chances of getting a sharp image with northern lights on a rocking, drifting sailboat are about as low as seeing a fog dome. tripods only help in having the boat sharp. everything else is trial an error. so many trials actually that you can make a short 24 fps film with all the images. the land and the houses took especially long to get them sharp. but the fact that there’s even is a slight chance of getting the desired result gives extra motivation that fuels the patience”

A few photos from crewmember on Aurora during the passage from Ísafjörður in Iceland to Nuuk on West coast of Greenland.
The crossing was 1333 nautical miles and took 8 days. The mainsail damaged in the Denmark Strait so they had to motor to SW Greenland and refuel in Qaqartoq. Except all the towns there are surrounded with ice so it was very hard navigating out of the ice again. Finally they got fair winds and reached Nuuk on Thursday morning. Aurora was in the best hands with Captain Manu in control, 2nd was Yann and mates Hugo and Michael. What an honor to have this crew taking care of Aurora 🙏

Aurora is still on her way to West Greenland. There is a lot of ice, headwind and the mainsail was damaged in a storm when crossing the Denmark Strait. Despite that she is now sailing at 8-9kn. Destination: Nuuk.
Updates on the crossing in story.

En route to Greenland, a single blip appears on the radar. Soon, dozens of icebergs, barely visible in the fog, form a maze of ice. Small pieces float by the boat as it zig zags through larger ones, their true size looming beneath the surface. An expert sailor remains alert at the helm as explorers bundled in jackets sip coffee and take pictures of this new world. Quiet anticipation turns to excitement as the fog lifts and reveals steep mountains towering around the boat, endless wilderness in all directions.

“The day of the frozen fjord.

I woke up from what I thought being a familiar sound. The sound of rain pouring onto the roof of a sailboat.

I looked at the window above, but there were no raindrops.
So I got up and never expected to see what I was about to.

The sky was a clear blue, with no cloud around. The wind had dropped to zero and the fjord around us had frozen.

It was not rain dropping on the top of our boat, it was ice slowly moving past our hull.

With the warming temperature, the ice slowly started moving towards the opening of the fjord. This gave the impression of us moving forward, creating this beautiful pathway behind our boat.

The 5th day of our ski&sailtrip with was simply breathtaking!”

“Recently, I got the chance to spend some time aboard .

It is a female-owned-company, which is pretty rare within the sailing industry. That's why it is also important to (owner) to support other women within the industry.

This I really liked. Because not only was our skitouring guide an awesome woman () as well was the first mate aboard (). Hrefna knew everything about the boat and the area and did not hesitate to get into the cold waters to get people ashore.

And so we set sail on the first day and sailed straight into gusts of 32.6kn and snow blowing into our faces. But if you know me, you know that this is what brings me joy 😋⛵

The pictures are taken on that very first day, where almost everyone got seasick and cold. But we all kept our smiles and looked forward to an amazing week of boatlife and skiing.”

23/04/2022

“When your boat captain and chef Manu tells you that we’re having an extreme barbecue while heading to some remote fjord somewhere off the east coast of Greenland well after the last colors of sunset have faded away you start to make up all kinds of scenarios of what this might entail but none of them will even come close to the actual experience. I don’t think even the captain himself could have planned for such intense mission.

That day we became a bit more grateful for the gifts we receive from nature. It was a special day not only because of the place but equally because of the people we shared this adventure with.

Today though is a time to reflect on such experiences from the past years, on landscapes that left you awestruck and generated a greater connection and appreciation for the natural world. With out these is much harder for Earth Day to have a greater significance than any other day of the year.”
