The use of illusion in art is nothing new, but a small town in Iceland is using the effect to help with public safety and traffic issues. In the small fishing village of Ísafjörður, a 3D pedestrian crossing was painted last month in an effort to slow traffic on a narrow street.

🌞 Tomorrow is the first day of summer, Sumardagurinn fyrsti, which marks the beginning of longer days.

Especially in the Westfjords, one wonders why the start of summer comes in April but the celebration is from the times of the old Icelandic calendar when there were only two seasons.

According to folklore, the summer will be a good one if the temperature drops below zero right before the first day of summer and “winter and summer freeze together” (try imagining that!).
There is no better place in Iceland where this is likely to happen. In fact in the Westfjords it often snows on the first day of summer and that is considered a good omen 😁
